Thank you Knocktwice Games for sending us a review code!
It’s not easy being a giant. Everyone assumes that you’re out to get them and will hurl various objects at you. As the title says, you’re a good goliath and are unarmed. However, you still need to defend yourself and will have to use what’s thrown at you to fight back. Even when goliath travels to get away from it all, trouble seems to find him once again.
There are three game worlds with three levels in each one. Each of the levels has waves of enemies that have to be dealt with. Good Goliath is a tower defense game, where YOU are the tower. There is a checkpoint after a few waves, but if you exit out of the game, you’ll have to start the level over from the beginning. Also, if you run out of health and utilize a checkpoint, your world score will be penalized as a result. Depending on your score, you’ll be awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals for the world. I didn’t earn any gold medals and lost out on some Steam achievements as a result. Quite frankly, I was just happy to get through them in the first place.
Strong Points: Fun story and gameplay
Weak Points: As you dodge incoming items you’ll often go out of range and trigger the calibration menu
Moral Warnings: Cartoon violence as your character is pelted with many sharp and explosive objects; you can throw pirates into the water to attract sharks; the last world takes place in the underworld (Styx) with flying demon enemies; witches are present
Each of the worlds has a different theme. The first world takes place in a medieval town where the peasants hurl pitchforks and barrels at you. Sometimes the barrels are explosive. To clear a level, you’ll have to take out a certain number of a specific enemy type. Most of the enemies have multiple hit points and require multiple projectiles thrown back at them. Explosives usually take them out in one shot. There isn’t any blood, but cartoon violence is present.
The second world takes place in the ocean with pirates, sharks, and a massive kraken to deal with. To lure sharks you can throw a pirate into the water. Sharks do a fair amount of damage when thrown into a dingy. The last (under) world takes place at the river Styx. It’s a fiery and unpleasant area with many flying demons to throw around.
The bosses are big and intimidating. Thankfully, they have some weak spots in the form of gems or colored areas to aim projectiles at. Sometimes the vulnerable spots are not clearly noted, as I didn’t see the colored area on the side of kraken’s mouth right away. Thankfully, my son pointed it out to me and I was able to finish off Purple Beard quickly afterward.

There’s a fair amount of enemies, weapons, and power-ups. Throughout all of the levels, you’ll sometimes see a cake-holding chef floating around on a helium balloon. If you take him down and catch the cake, you’ll get some of your health back. This comes in handy for boss battles! The first world has some witches flying around and they’re responsible for turning the king into a giant and becoming your first boss battle. The last boss is the lord of the underworld.
My biggest complaint with this game is the constant re-calibration. You have to actively dodge incoming fireballs and projectiles throughout the game. If you move too aggressively or slightly off center, the game will pause and ask you to resume or calibrate. Having this happen twenty or more times during a boss fight is rather annoying.
Because of the calibration issues and average gameplay, I would recommend holding off for a sale before picking up Good Goliath. The visuals and narration are charming, but the checkpoint system and calibration nagging leave a bad taste in my mouth. There are better VR games available at the same price point.
