Thank you GamersGate for the review copy of this game!
Some may have read my review on A. Typical RPG, which is another game developed by Pyrodactyl Games. Suffice to say, I labeled it as one of the worst games I have ever played. Considering my dislike towards that game, I looked forward to reviewing Will Fight for Food. Not because I wanted to reproach another Pyrodactyl game, but because I had hope that this game would be far superior. So, I came in with a fresh mind, and I'm happy to say that I actually enjoyed my time playing Will Fight for Food.
The Whateville Fighting Federation (WFF) has announced a tournament featuring eight amateur wrestlers who will battle for a contract that allows them to be a part of the WFF roster. The plot centers around a masked wrestler that goes by the stage name Raptor (his real name is Jared). Before the match, Jared is introduced to all of the wrestlers who will be taking place in the tournament. He was then told that his first opponent would be a wrestler that goes by the name of Marine. Unfortunately, Jared lost his match. Full of shame, Jared disappears from the city of Whateville, never to be seen again. Years later, Jared finds himself back in the city to find that chaos has ensued since he left. Walter, who is the chairman of the WFF, has taken control over most of Whateville. Jared decides to help all of his past wrestling buddies, in an attempt to repair the corruption that is being caused by Walter.

Strong Points: Great concept; Excellent soundtrack
Weak Points: Unresponsive controls; Graphic and Animation glitches; Recycled character models; Lack of character portraits
Moral Warnings: Violence; Minor swearing; Lords name in vain used repeatedly; Stereotypes; Sexual joke; You can attack police offers and civilians if you choose to
The object of the game is to fulfill tasks that are given to you by past wrestlers and civilians. Sometimes the tasks can be boring and tiring and feel like fetch quests; other times they can be fun and exciting. An option is given to you that allows you to attack anyone you feel like by putting on a wrestling mask. You have the choice of either helping someone or beating them up until things go your way; just don't be surprised when you get ganged up on by doughnut eating cops (they're literally eating doughnuts). You will get into conversations where you have to try to convince someone to make a choice (more on this later). The gameplay is very similar to a typical side-scrolling beat 'em up, except with an RPG element added to the mix. There are three separate attacks you can use, which are: punching, kicking and charging. You can string any of these three attacks together as a combo. Along with that, you will find several pieces of gear that will help you build up your stats, such as: Health, Attack, Defense and Speed. The further you get into the game, the more you will uncover hidden secrets that were caused by the corruption of Walter.
As for the dialogue options, you are given several that can change the way the story goes. Occasionally, you will need to convince someone in order to help solve a conflict. You decide on Jared's body language, opinion and tone. So, for instance, there is a moment where you will try to convince a home owner to allow an ex-wrestler to live outside of his home by attempting to trade him a cigar for his lawn. So, he asked me the question “You're saying if I just pretend to smoke it, I'll become a super babe magnet?”. My choices for body language are: aggressive, defensive, relaxed or excited. My choices for opinion are to agree, be indifferent or disagree. And finally, the choices for tone are: deadpan, sincere, insult or skeptical. I decided to go with the combination of relaxed, disagree and sincere. He replied according to my choices, which is very neat and is a huge improvement to a similar concept that was presented in A. Typical RPG.
Although I really enjoy the concept of the game, the controls are horrible to say the least. There are many animation glitches that cause frustration when you're in the heat of battle and sometimes the attacks don't connect. It's almost impossible to win a fight against more than four people because they all gang up on you and don't allow you to strike. So all you can do is sit back and watch your health deplete. When an enemy attacks you from behind, you can't tap the key to turn around; you need to hold down the key for at least half a second until Jared will completely turn around. I had a lot of ragequit moments due to the sluggish, unresponsive controls.

The visuals are nice and appealing, but there are many things that set this game back from getting a good graphics score. For one, you will see a lot of recycled character models throughout the game. This can be acceptable if it's an enormous game full of different characters. However, Will Fight for Food has a very small amount of characters, so I feel like there is no excuse. Second, there is usually a portrait that displays next to the dialogue when you talk to someone. However many of the NPCs have absolutely no portrait, which is also inexcusable. Third, I found some graphical glitches here and there, and without spoiling anything, there is a sequence with the nerds in the academy that was so horribly done that I honestly felt sick to my stomach afterward. Lastly, the animation is glitchy and at times you will see Jared wearing a mask for a split second, even though you didn't put one on. Besides these issues, I really enjoyed the art-style.
The soundtrack is great; in fact, it's excellent. The music fit well with the scenery and it helped build the atmosphere of the game, and I enjoyed it wholeheartedly. I don't usually do this often, but I would intentionally leave the music playing in the background while I was doing other things. As for the sound effects, they're nothing special. There were moments where I felt like I should have heard a different sound instead of the one that was in its place. Also, many times I have felt like I should have heard a sound during a certain moment but didn't hear anything, which is kinda disappointing. Either way, it won't set the score back too much because of the greatness that is the music.
Will Fight for Food has some morality issues that may turn people off from playing it. Considering this is a Beat 'em up game based on the wrestling world, there will be a good amount of violence presented in the game. Fortunately, you can avoid most of it by solving conflicts in ways that don't resort to violence. Many characters will say the D word repeatedly, use the Lord's name in vain, and there is a moment where someone says a sexual joke. There are some stereotypes in the game due to an ongoing war between “jocks” and “nerds”. There are also jabs at police officers, claiming that they are useless and eat a lot of doughnuts. Also, depending on your choices, you can decide to attack police officers and civilians.
Overall, Pyrodactyl did a great job on this title. Although the missions do get tiring and there are many glitches, I still enjoyed the game for it's interesting setting, great concept and excellent music. I completed the game in less than an hour, which is pretty disappointing, but I would like to see a sequel in the future, mainly because of the great design of the characters and the uniqueness of the story. Excellent job Pyrodactyl, you have healed the wound from A. Typical RPG.
