Note: Multiplayer is still a WIP, so it will not be tested. Some levels were literally unfinishable due to missing content, so this review will only cover what aspects of the game were playable at the time of writing.

I would like to thank VoxRay Games, Inc. for the review key to this title.

Procedural generation in games has the possibility of creating dynamic worlds. It can also just create lots of samey copypasted variants on basic themes. Voxile aims to make the content of the first style but often falls into the second.

The basic story (as this game is at this point a loose collection of areass) is that a mysterious ooze is causing chaos everywhere. In various maps, you will have to fight the ooze and in others you will need rebuild things the ooze has destroyed. There are some maps that are more in the vein of doing puzzles or exploration, but the malevolent ooze is a recurring element on most maps. While not present in all areas, there are some light crafting elements similar to Minecraft, in which different items are combined on a crafting bench or table to form new items. Overall, it feels like a mix of genres but doesn't really settle on any one thing.

This game (not currently complete at the time of this writing) also includes a level editor, so, theoretically, this title could provide an infinite amount of player-created levels. Unfortunately, the existing content available feels limited to each level having some degree of fetch quest and may or may not have some combat.

Voxile
Highlights:

Strong Points: Great potential for creating new worlds to explore; lovely-looking graphics due to ray tracing
Weak Points: Poor instructions for some quests; some level content is incomplete
Moral Warnings: Semi-explicit violence against NPCs; presence of the undead; mentions of smuggling illegal items

It's important to mention I've only covered what aspects of the game are complete. Some of the sample areas I could not finish due to missing content, so bear in mind this could change as the game matures further.

Graphically, this game is really beautiful despite using a 3D pixelated style. This is largely due to the heavy use of ray tracing, which provides some lush and beautiful colors. There are nice-looking lighting effects and the water is really beautiful. That said, the minimum requirements are quite high as a result, so this title will require a nice GPU to get the most benefit.

Sounds and music are minimalistic. Most music is generally some sort of mild fantasy ambient track. The sounds are good but nothing really stands out. This title only supports keyboard and mouse control by default. There are some tutorials in game to ease you into basic mechanics. It is playable on the Steam Deck, but you may have to rebind buttons for optimal play.

Stability is pretty solid. Voxile runs natively on Windows, but will run fine on Linux via Steam Proton. It's also rated Playable on the Steam Deck. Due to heavy use of raytracing, I would make sure to at least hit the minimum required GPU requirement (which the Steam Deck does clear albeit only barely) to avoid slowdowns.

Voxile
Score Breakdown:
Higher is better
(10/10 is perfect)

Game Score - 74%
Gameplay - 12/20
Graphics - 8/10
Sound - 7/10
Stability - 5/5
Controls - 5/5

Morality Score - 76%
Violence - 4/10
Language - 10/10
Sexual Content - 10/10
Occult/Supernatural - 7/10
Cultural/Moral/Ethical - 7/10

Morally, there isn't too much to complain about.

Violence is done either with melee weapons, guns, or spells. While the raytraced pixel art style doesn't make this look as good as realistic graphics, you can see clear body damage as you continue to hit NPCs. There are mild sprays of pixelated blood as well. You can, although it's not recommended, hit friendly NPCs, who will fight back.

The language is fairly clean and the art style precludes any sexual content. There are mentions of vampires and the undead. The magic in the setting appears generic, and the fantasy elements are generic as well. The "ooze" that is a recurring threat appear as generic green monsters of mysterious origin.

Morally, there are mentions of smuggling and some NPCs are implied to sell illegal goods. That aside, there isn't much in the way of moral concerns.

Overall, Voxile has interesting ideas and needs a lot of polish. Technically, it runs well but needs some mechanics further fleshed out. Morally, it's generally suitable for any older child on up. I can't say I recommend this title, at least not until it's polished far more.
