Thank you Threaks for sending us a copy of this game to review!
Beatbuddy's world of music is in danger as his siblings have been kidnapped. He must rescue them and defeat the villain who took them to restore peace into his underwater world. There are six beautifully drawn levels with five chapters within them.
The game soundtrack is quite good and the 2D world feels alive as it moves to the beat. While this game has a platformer feel to it, there are plenty of puzzles thrown in for good measure as well. Many of the creatures are impenetrable and you'll have to time your movements to avoid touching them. There are only a handful of enemies and they each have an attack pattern to watch out for.
Strong Points: Beautiful visuals and thumping soundtrack
Weak Points: Save corrupting glitches
Moral Warnings: Some potty humor and mild language
Blocking your paths are many closed gates and coral clusters. To break through the coral barriers you'll have to bounce off of some pods to gain enough momentum to smash through them. Sometimes the path isn't straight and you'll have to align mirrors to bounce you in the proper angle/direction.
To open gates you'll have to put their lantern shaped keys back into the proper slots. Though many gates are not picky about which key is used, some require specific keys to function. To up the ante, some keys explode if they are not placed in a socket fast enough.
There have been some moments in the game where I have gotten flustered and quit, but usually after a cool down period I was able to try again and succeed. Despite the fact that you cannot do manual saves, the check point placement is pretty generous. There have been times where I have broken the game's level by moving in a non-expected way and corrupted my save (thanks to a checkpoint saving my game in a broken state). When that happened I had to restart my game from the beginning of the level's chapter. While inconvenient, I was happy I didn't have to lose all of my progress. Sadly, many users have experienced game breaking bugs and Beatbuddy has received many negative Steam reviews as a result.

Beatbuddy supports Linux, game controllers and big screen mode. While there is a Steam achievement to beat this game in three hours, it took me seven. There are fifteen achievements in total. I'm not sure if this is because I have a review code of the game, but I cannot view my achievements and when I was playing it, my Steam friends were not able to see the name of the game in my status.
The dance music and colorful graphics caught the attention of my children and for the most part, this game is pretty family friendly. There are some instance of potty humor as a character is talking about a meal he had while using an outhouse. At the end of the game when the villain is defeated he says the word d*mn. The majority of the dialogue is text based and voice acted with beat boxing so you don't actually hear the word being said.
Though this game is cute, I cannot wholly recommend it to children because of the language. The asking price of $9.99 is reasonable, but it often goes on sale and has been featured in Humble Bundles. As beautiful as the graphics are and how awesome the music is, it's a shame that this game is still plagued with many bugs. I hope some of them get fixed before its Wii U release next year.
