Thank you Kasedo Games for sending us this game to review!

A mad scientist in space is wreaking havoc and it’s up to two special agents to infiltrate his lab and bring him down.  These agents are Cye, a master brawler, and Chrome, a specialist in ranged warfare.  Together these two agents must combine their powers to survive multiple waves of mutated insects.

ZAMB! Biomutant Extermination is a 3D tower defense style game where you must set up your defenses and survive multiple waves of incoming alien bugs. There are twenty-seven levels altogether and they are spread out in three locations.  You can play the areas in any order, but the previous level must be beaten before unlocking the next.

ZAMB! Biomutant Extermination
Highlights:

Strong Points: Fun tower defense gameplay with upgradable powers and turrets
Weak Points: Dumb AI does not use character’s powers/abilities
Moral Warnings: Alien bugs splatter green goo as they die

Each level has up to six stars you can earn by surviving to the end with lots of points and combo attacks.  There are also optional objectives that require you to use specific attacks and power combinations.   Cye can charge his punches with fire and electricity; combining these attacks with ice traps and turrets put these insects in a world of pain.  Chrome can set up turrets that shoot bullets, gas, electricity, or healing energy.

Other than the default melee punches and bullets, the more powerful attacks require money to equip.  Some money crystals can be found in destroyable chests scattered around the level, but a majority of it will come from defeated aliens.  If an ally falls in battle, you’ll have to resurrect them by the nearest reactor that has been hacked by your team.  If all of the reactors are destroyed by the insects, you’ll lose the level if both agents perish.

Although I did not find anyone online to play with, local multiplayer is possible by hooking up a controller while the other person uses the keyboard and mouse.   When playing solo you have to constantly switch between the two agents since the AI is not smart enough to deploy turrets or use Cye’s elemental attacks.

The graphics are colorful and the attacks often have comic book style bubbles letting you know when you’re pwning your foes.  There are various Steam achievements including ones for upgrading the turrets and Cye’s attacks fully.  Each character has over two hundred possible upgrades.

These upgrades are essential in ensuring your survival against the tougher mutant insects and boss battles.  Usually splatters of green goop appear as they meet their maker.  Other than the insect gore, this game is relatively kid safe.

While the asking price of $19.99 is reasonable, there is not much replay ability after completing the twenty seven levels.  You can always go back and improve the number of stars for completed levels or unlock all of the Steam achievements.  Fans of Tower Defense style games should keep an eye out for sales on ZAMB! Biomutant Extermination, but keep in mind that it doesn't bring much new to the genre.
