Thank you Loyola Press for providing us with a trial of this game to review!
I was raised in a Catholic home and completed many of the sacraments. Although I am no longer Catholic, I do appreciate the spiritual foundation it provided for me at a young age. I don’t agree with some of the prayers and teachings promoted in this title, however, I can still see the value in it for Catholics and Protestants alike.
Wanderlight: A Pilgrim’s Adventure is broken down into seven levels with monthly or annual subscription plans needed to access them. A free three-day trial is available if you’re interested in checking it out. This game is available on mobile devices and on web browsers. The browser window is quite small and doesn’t seem to have a full-screen mode. You can enlarge the game by pressing the ctrl and plus keys simultaneously.
You begin the game by customizing your young pilgrim who is given a lantern to find their way in the world. As your character makes God-honoring choices, it will become brighter. Conversely, it will grow dimmer if you make poor choices. Your goal is to find your Godparents and help as many people as you can along the way. Like the Holy Spirit, you’ll have a dove that will guide you and coo when you’re near something interesting. A sparkling path will also lead you onto your next objective.
Strong Points: A fun way to learn the principles of the Catholic faith; good voice acting
Weak Points: Really small screen (can be enlarged with Ctrl +); Non-Catholics will not agree with some of the teachings and prayers in this title
Moral Warnings: Non-Catholics may not agree with some of the prayers and practices in this game
It won’t take long until you reach a shrine dedicated to a saint. Upon visiting their shrine, you’ll learn about them and be encouraged to pray. There are many prayers you’ll learn in this game including The Apostle’s Creed, Glory Be, Grace, Hail Mary, Sign of the Cross, and more.
While you’ll be doing various errands, many of them are Biblical and you’ll learn about the Bible stories that inspired them. My suggestion here would be to include the references so kids could look it up and read more on their own.
The graphics are colorful and the interface is easy to use. My biggest complaint is that the browser-based game has such a small screen by default. Another nitpick is that some of the animations are a little wonky. For example, the dove sometimes flies sideways or backwards and looks goofy when doing so.

The background music is very soothing and changes as you explore different areas. I like how every character is voice acted and they all sound so friendly (even when you turn down their requests).
Wanderlight: A Pilgrim’s Adventure is a family-friendly title and there’s little to worry about morally. If you’re not comfortable with paying respect to various saint shrines and praying to Mary you may want to give this game a pass. If those aspects don’t bother you and if you’re a practicing Catholic, this is a fun way to teach your children about Biblical stories and principles.
Since this game is not compatible with my relatively new Android phone, I cannot test out the mobile version. Other than the small resolution size, this game ran fine in my web browser. There’s a playable demo that allows you to play levels B, E, and G. The educator licensing page is fully functional with the levels selling for $3.99 with a minimum order of ten. Unfortunately, the individual licensing page seems to be down as of this review.
