Thank you Orangepixel for sending us this game to review!
Gunslugs is an over-the-top shooter that is easy to learn and takes some skill to master. The controls are simple and customizable. All you need to know is how to move, shoot, jump, and perform an action. Once you can do all that, it's time to blow stuff up!
Gunslugs 2 picks up from the original's story, but this time the Black Duck Army is back and tougher than before. In order to stop the enemy (other than riddling them with bullets) you have to destroy their beacon towers across the world. Not only are the beacons more complex than the original game's, they are randomly generated inside so you don't know what enemies and alien technology awaits you.
Strong Points: Retro style shooter game that's easy to play but still offers a decent challenge; randomly generated areas
Weak Points: Not that engaging of a story, but it's still fun to play
Moral Warnings: Bloodless violence; minor language (d*mn); religious references
Other new additions include a daily challenge and an arcade mode that unlocks after completing the first two worlds. There are seven worlds with levels in each of them. Like many games, there's a big boss waiting for you at the end to try and stop you from saving the world.
To take down enemies and bosses there are lots of fun weapons to try out. There are chain guns, double firing guns, flame throwers, rocket launchers, and mechanical suits that fire rockets too. The mech suits are available after you defeat the soldier that was commanding it. The downside is that the suits are not capable of jumping, so their usefulness is rather limited.
Most levels have stores where you can increase your ammunition, adrenaline, or buy armored suits and shields. Like the beacons, the store's merchandise is random. No matter how many times you die and restart the level, you get to keep the gold you have accumulated.
The beacons have a wide variety of enemies and obstacles including falling gears, poisonous slime, flame throwers, cannons, and numerous soldiers firing in your general direction. Inside each beacon is a trapped agent that can use you rescuing. Once rescued, you will become that agent with a full health bar. Any equipment and upgrades will transfer over.

There's a decent variety in the levels and they mostly follow the same formula of deactivating beacons and hopping on the chopper to move onto the next level. I found it easier to take out all of the roaming enemies and then backtracking to take care of the beacons. Unfortunately using this method caused the commander to cuss me out each time. The commander told me to go back and deactivate all of the d*mn beacons.
While there is some language, there isn't any blood. Even if there was blood, the graphics are so pixilated that it wouldn't be too detailed or graphic. I don't mind the retro look and the graphics are more detailed in comparison to the original game.
The chip tune soundtrack is the same as the original and is professionally composed by Gavin Harrison. The artwork is done by Scott Tykoski. All of the coding and marketing is handled by Pascal Bestebroer.
Gunslugs 2 is an impressive title from a (mostly) one person team. Despite the occasional glitch or hiccup, this game is very fun to play and I highly recommend checking it out. It can be yours for less than five dollars on Steam and less than three on mobile platforms. The PC version gives you Steam achievements and lets you customize the controls to use a gamepad if desired (highly recommended!). The original Gunslugs is available for $1.50 on Google Play and there is a free ad supported version as well. If you like shooter games, I highly recommend checking this series out.
