Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

Thank you Nickelodeon for sending us the Season 2 Blu-Ray set to review!

Last year we reviewed the entire first season of Star Trek: Prodigy which was sent to us on two separate Blu-ray discs. Each disc had ten episodes and left the series in a cliffhanger. The series was canceled by Paramount+ in June 2023, but Netflix picked up the series and released the first season on its streaming service in December 2023. The second season was released on Netflix in July 2024.

The first episode of season two is twice as long as the rest in the series. As cadet hopefuls, Dal, Rok Tahk, Jankom Pog, Murf, and Zero are selected to board the USS Voyager as part of admiral Janeway's crew. They quickly realize that they are cogs in the machine and are not given any special treatment or much time with the admiral and are expected to focus on their studies. Most of the crew love pursing their education, but Dal is not into reading textbooks, especially Temporal Mechanics 101. This becomes a running joke as Dal lacks the knowledge to understand time travel, as it plays a big part in this season. In fact, Wesley Crusher makes an appearance as the time master who guides the crew in fixing the timeline they messed up.

Admiral Janeway had a cloaked vessel called the Infinity which was going to be used to rescue Chakotay who was referenced in the previous season. The Prodigy crew with the addition of a Vulcan named Maj'el, sneak onto the Infinity and accidentally launch it back in time. As a result, the timeline is significantly altered and Gwyn's existence is now in jeopardy. With the help of a stabilizer she is able to remain in their time, but this is a temporary fix until they correct their mistakes.

Gwyn and Dal's romantic relationship is developed along with a couple of other relationships coming to light new and old. I won't give them away, but I'm thankful that this show isn't catering to the LGBTQ agenda in this regard. In fact, Star Trek: Prodigy is a very family friendly show and can be enjoyed by Star Trek fans young and old. Longtime Star Trek fans will appreciate the references to Tribbles and the Mirror Universe. Like the previous season, this one too ends on a cliffhanger. I hope the series doesn't get canceled again and I look forward to watching more adventures from the Prodigy crew!

You can own season two for less than $25 on Amazon. Surprisingly, the Blu-ray is cheaper than the DVD. The visuals are amazing, so I highly recommend the Blu-Ray edition. There are two featurettes to watch if you want to see some behind the scenes insight on the show's inspiration.
