Thank you Crunchy Leaf Games for sending a review code!

There are many spaceship shooter games out there, but what sets Galactic Glitch apart from the others is the ability to hurl objects at your enemies. Along with chucking asteroids and debris at your foes, you can also use one of many weapons against them as well. You must first locate blueprints before being able to unlock new weapons. Exploration is key in this game!

Galactic Glitch starts with your ship being instructed to explore your surroundings to find a way for your creator, Siren, to escape. In the event of your demise, Siren is very kind and reassures you that you’re still her most promising out of all of the other ships she has tried making before you. As you explore outer space, you may come across earlier prototypes and if you decide to recruit them they can unlock new technology and weaponry for your mission. Galactic Glitch supports a rogue-lite mode where unlocked technology will carry forward on future runs, despite everything else starting fresh and completely different after your death.

Upgrades are researched and applied in a sanctuary base on the outskirts of the galaxy you’re scouting out. Upon leaving your base, you will start a new journey or return to the last sector you were in. The galaxy is comprised of many room-like areas with the gateways to leaving them not appearing until all of the enemies have been dealt with. Sometimes you will have multiple routes available and it pays to circle back and explore everything.

Highlights:

Strong Points: Fun concept; pretty visuals; good soundtrack
Weak Points: Some areas are a little repetitive
Moral Warnings: You’ll be shooting down other ships and aliens

Sometimes, a room will have a crate in it that will unlock a health or stat boost after the foes are destroyed. If you’re not careful, this crate could be destroyed in the crossfire! Each sector tends to have a storefront somewhere. Upon discovering it, you can heal your ship and buy various upgrades. My favorite upgrades are the ones that spawn helper drones to fight along with me.

Some rooms have a challenge trial where you’ll have to take down waves of enemies before the exit gateways will appear. You’ll be rewarded for your efforts with money and power-ups. Before you can leave the sector, you’ll have to defeat its mini-boss. These bosses will typically spray lots of bullets and have area of effect attacks to avoid. Once annihilated, you can collect some good loot left behind by them. Before leaving the area, you’ll have the opportunity to open up a crate of goodies if you either explored every room or completed the sector under a specified time limit. After that, you’ll have an option to heal your ship before continuing on your journey. Last but not least, you’ll have the ability to abandon power-ups no longer needed or upgrade ones you like provided you have enough credits to do so.

Glitching plays a role as your ship can use its glitch ability to expose partially hidden crates or get past gates that are otherwise inaccessible. In order to use your glitch power, you need to have enough credits available.

Galactic Glitch has a good amount of variety when it comes to weapons and enemies. The technology tree is pretty generous too. The sectors blend into each other but can be identified by their color and enemies present.

Galactic Glitch
Score Breakdown:
Higher is better
(10/10 is perfect)

Game Score - 86%
Gameplay: 17/20
Graphics: 8/10
Sound: 8/10
Stability: 5/5
Controls: 5/5

Morality Score - 88%
Violence: 7/10
Language: 10/10
Sexual Content: 10/10
Occult/Supernatural: 7/10
Cultural/Moral/Ethical: 10/10

Some of the enemies are mechanical, while others are alien-like and will bleed when shot at. Other than violence against aliens and ships, Galactic Glitch is pretty tame morally.

There are over seventy Steam achievements, with most of them revolving around defeating various bosses with different weapon configurations. If you’re into collecting Steam achievements, there’s a lot of replayability here. At the very least, you can expect at least five hours for your first run through.

The electronica background music is catchy and sets the mood nicely. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to be available for purchase on Steam.

Overall, I found Galactic Glitch to be nicely polished and fun to play. Along with a nice 35% off launch discount you can save 30% on Alpherior’s game Genome Guardian if purchased together. The normal asking price is $14.99 which is fair. If you enjoy twin-stick shooters and rouge-like games, you’ll definitely want to add Galactic Glitch to your Wishlist!
