Thank you Dream Path Studios for sending us this game to review!
I must admit that I’ve never considered going into dentistry. It requires a steady hand and precision to drill out cavities. There’s also the concern about bad breath. With Dental Madness Cavity Mania, you don’t have to worry about bad breath, but maneuvering the mirror and drill will take some practice and getting used to.
If you’re just rusty on one of the tools you can get a refresher on the specific instrument. If you’re new to the game I highly recommend completing the full tutorial. Even after going through the tutorial I felt like I was playing Surgeon Simulator with the wonky control scheme.
Strong Points: Interesting concept
Weak Points: Tricky controls; Steam achievements didn’t work for me; repetitive music
Moral Warnings: None!
The mirror uses the WASD controls with the R and F keys to move it around. To change the angle of the mirror you’ll need to press the left shift key and use the same buttons to rotate it to your liking. The mouse is used to move the drill around and the left button brings it up and the right button lowers it. The Tab button will toggle between the rotation and movement control scheme.
It will take a while to master the controls and sadly you’ll be timed on the twenty levels so you’ll have to move quickly! If you don’t finish with a patient in time, you can still work on them but your score/income will drop with every additional second used.
The first few levels have the cavities in easily seen locations and using the mirror at first is optional. Later in the game, you will only be able to see the cavities with the mirror so mastering it is essential. Using the process of elimination is not a feasible method since you are penalized for drilling the wrong tooth. A warning sign will display on the screen if you’re working on the wrong tooth.

Pain management is not a concern so you don’t have to worry about numbing your patients up before working on them. I’m not sure what species they are, but their eyes are rather goofy looking and they should probably make an appointment with an optometrist.
The 3D graphics are not incredibly detailed, but they get the job done. The sound effects are minimal too. I’m thankful that there are no pain-inflicted screams or grunts. Some more variety in background music would be a welcome addition though.
This game ran well and I didn’t experience any stability issues. There are three Steam achievements available and despite completing the requirements for two of them (completing the first and seventh levels), they didn’t unlock for me.
If you know anyone interested in pursuing a career in dentistry, they may enjoy Dental Madness Cavity Mania. It’s a clean game and suitable for players of all ages capable of learning the complicated control scheme. With the scoreboard there is some replayability, but I would hold off for a sale.
