The evil Doctor Osmium has planted dynamite on landmarks around the world. To make matters worse he has protected his handiwork with henchmen and electrical traps. As bad as this may seem, it should pose little challenge for the daredevil, Johnny Dynamite. He is armed with a jetpack and sticks of dynamite to throw at aliens that get in his way.
There are fifty-four levels in the story mode and many more can be made and shared via QR codes from the level editor. The goal in each level is to collect all of the dynamite sticks in as little time as possible. The longer you take, the less stars you'll earn. If the timer bar runs out, Johnny will fail at protecting the sabotaged landmark.

Strong Points: Easy to pick up and play; QR code sharable user-created levels
Weak Points: Inaccurate collision detection; some levels can be frustrating
Moral Warnings: Cartoon violence
The levels vary in difficulty and the 53rd level made me rage quit. The rest of them are fairly easy though. Some of the levels have no enemies, only structures to quickly maneuver around. Often times there are electrical barriers that have to be deactivated by pressing a button or just waiting for their deactivation pattern.
Enemies populate most of the levels and their movement patterns are not predictable. This can be troublesome when it comes to using portals. There's nothing worse than using a portal and spawning directly into an enemy. Touching an enemy is instant death and sometimes the collision detection radius of the enemies and spikes are questionable. Fortunately, you can throw dynamite at enemies to neutralize them as a threat. There are only a handful of enemy types and some require more sticks of dynamite to take down than others.

Despite the 2D appearance, the 3D effects are utilized on the 3DS' top screen. I have seen the big 3D "Unlucky" text numerous times as I have died. The level editor is simple to use as you drag and drop platforms, enemies, portals, and sticks of dynamite into place. My kids had no trouble creating levels and enjoyed doing so.
The background music is rock n' roll with some retro flair added to it. The sound effects get annoying after a while, especially Johnny's "blegh!" when dying.
Appropriateness wise there's not too much to worry about in Johnny Dynamite. Just explosions from dynamite and some mechanical pieces are seen as the robotic henchmen are blown to bits.
Overall Johnny Dynamite is a decent pick-up and play game that can entertain someone for an hour or two. I've gotten to level 53 on a single day's visit to Great America. I used this game to entertain myself (and my kids) while waiting to ride the Goliath and Superman roller coasters. The asking price is a reasonable $3.99, but there are better games on Nintendo's eShop for around the same price.
