Nintendo Switch 2 sells 9.2M units in four months
London, October 30, 2025 – The Nintendo Switch 2 has sold an estimated 1.08 million units worldwide in September 2025, bringing lifetime sales to 9.24 million in just four months, according to Finbold Research based on VGChartz data.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 led the market in September with 1.16 million units sold, lifting its lifetime sales to 80.25 million. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S trailed with just 149,337 units, a sharp 49% year-on-year drop that highlights its struggles to maintain momentum.
On a daily basis, the Switch 2 sold an average of 35,967 units in September, almost matching the PS5’s 38,552. The new console is also outperforming the original Switch, selling 460,000 more units in its fourth month than the 2017 launch managed at the same stage.
As the crucial Christmas holiday season approaches, analysts expect the competition between the PS5 and Switch 2 to define the next phase of the console market. Both consoles are now selling at a near-identical daily pace, positioning Nintendo as the key growth challenger to Sony’s dominance.
Jordan Major, Editor-in-Chief at Finbold, commented:
“The Switch 2’s rapid climb to more than nine million units in just four months is a clear signal of demand heading into the holiday season. At its current pace, sales will easily surpass 10 million before year-end.”
Diana Paluteder, Finbold Head of Content, added:
“Our research highlights a decisive shift in the console market. Sony’s PS5 remains the leader, but Nintendo’s Switch 2 has captured momentum at a critical moment. The upcoming holiday season could see the gap narrow even further.”
Looking ahead, industry attention is already turning to 2026, when the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VIcould deliver a major boost to PlayStation 5 sales. While Nintendo’s Switch 2 has seized early momentum in 2025, Sony’s exclusive content pipeline and blockbuster releases may prove decisive in keeping the PS5 on top of the global console market.
