Master tactics and free the land in a fantasy game perfecting turn-based combat
[Tbilisi, Georgia] – August 4, 2025 – The kingdom has fallen silent as a vile usurper takes the throne. Nobody reacts except for a brave group of adventurers. Felid Entertainment and indie.io invite all those who stand for truth and justice to embark on a quest in Valiant Tactics, a turn-based tactical RPG roguelite that refines classic gameplay, combining with a modern edge.
Combat is the heart of Valiant Tactics, refining the hex-based turn-based experience that stood the test of time. Its primary feature is that it dispenses with the chance to hit mechanic common to other games in the genre. Every attack connects and deals damage, turning health into a precious resource and giving every point of damage dealt or blocked vital importance. Every choice made by the players feeds into combat performance, from the equipment their heroes carry into battle, through their classes and upgrades, to decisions made on the trail that can make or break a run.
Gear is more than simple increases in health or damage dealt. For example, melee weapons allow characters to retaliate once each turn when attacked in melee for half damage, while ranged weapons allow for attacking with impunity, but trading damage for such safety. Equipping a dagger or staff will bypass enemy defense, but lack the utility of a stout broadsword - unless it's poisoned or imbued with fire. Shields offer different special abilities allowing heroes to buff each other, absorb damage, or more - and with each item collected, the array of options on the battlefield grows.
However, equipment is nothing without a hero to wear it. Valiant Tactics gives players eight distinct classes to choose from. Each has a broadly defined role on the battlefield, from the tank-like Bulwark, through the damage-dealing Barbarian, to the precise Marksman or AoE-focused Ardent. However, thanks to the game's open-ended character system, players are free to define and redefine each battlefield role: Their unique class-specific abilities do not force a specific playstyle and with the right weapons, combat items, and talents chosen on the warpath, a stealthy Slayer can dominate a battlefield like a berserker, a Necromancer can hold the frontline backed by their minions, and a healer Cleric can turn spilling blood into a terrifying art form.
Reaching that point takes time and experience, gained by both the player and their heroes while on the trail. Each chapter is divided into stages, with players choosing their path from several available options. These may include combat encounters that guarantee a level up for the surviving heroes, a random encounter for rolling the dice, a camp offering rest or recruits, and more: Each decision has to be carefully weighed against the heroes' current ability to fight. Facing beastfolk or wild animals? Better rummage through the party's belongings to find the right tools for the job - and if there aren't any, maybe it's better to take their chances with a random encounter that might give them an edge in upcoming battles... Or lead to an even worse encounter that will leave worse off if they just fought their way through.
This strategic layer of Valiant Tactics is complemented by choices made on the trail: After each battle, players choose between three options on how to continue. These may be combat encounters of varying complexity and environmental effects that can dramatically alter the gameplay, random events that can alter the party's journey for better or worse, or options to shop, upgrade, or simply rest. Each choice affects the journey forward and each choice must be weighed carefully by the players: A battered party might prefer to skip a level-up from a won battle in favor of throwing the dice in a random encounter, while a successful one might opt for one more battle to grow their power further.
This tension defines Valiant Tactics, requiring players to stay on their toes and make informed decisions throughout each run. Better equipment and more powerful heroes offer more options and a greater margin of error, but no combat encounter will ever be boring as the complex, interlocking game mechanics are ready to produce surprises - but also allow dedicated players to unravel deep strategic layers and come up with truly incredible synergies. And if they fail? Each victory and each defeat are a learning experience, with clearly understandable reasons for both.
Ready to liberate a kingdom and put your tactical ability to the test? Valiant Tactics is now available on Steam.
