We have a cat. Actually, we have three - no, four - cats. But one of our cats, Andromeda, has a very bizarre, somewhat disgusting habit.
She crunches her toes.
I'm not exactly sure how or why she does it, but when it comes time to clean her back toes, she extends her back foot, sticks out her claws and starts chowing down.
Crunch crunch crunch....
She especially likes doing this while sitting on the back of the couch right next to someone sitting nearby.
And yes, it sounds like she's trying to eat her toes off. She's not, though - she's just cleaning her back claws. But it's still a rather disturbing sound.
Crunch crunch crunch....
She has a nickname of "Crunchytoes," for obvious reasons. Especially when it's bath time.
Cats are funny.

im a dog person but we had a Boxer that constantly chewed nails
Vet said it was an allergy to something in her food (she can't eat pork products) So we had to find a chicken and rice based food maybe this helps.

One of our dogs (we have 2) occasionally crunches her nails but it's quite rare and you can barely hear the sound.
