Cordova, TN; May 26, in the year of our Lord 2013 -- It is no secret that the Wii U is performing below expectations. Nintendo routinely sends out press releases bragging on how well the Nintendo 3DS is doing. Yet they continually fail to mention the sales of the Wii U. Want to know a little secret? Sometimes what is not said is more important than what is said. So the brain trust here at Family Friendly Gaming got together and put down the Top Five Things Nintendo could do to improve the prospects of the Wii U. They best move on these fast or the Playstation 4, and Xbox One will leave the Wii U in the dust.

Port over DS/3DS titles

This seems like a no-brainer and probably ones of the easiest things Nintendo could do. We have a TV screen, and we have a screen on the Nintendo Wii U Gamepad. The Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo DS have two screens as well. The bottom screen on the DS/3DS and Wii U Gamepad are all touch screens. Nintendo has embraced downloading games on their systems, so why aren't we playing DS/3DS games on the Wii U yet? Being able to play Gameboy Advance games on the Gamecube (thanks to that add on) was one of the coolest things we have done in a long time. Nintendo needs to bring that back.

Remove Gamepad Tether

When I first saw the Wii U Gamepad I thought it was a uDraw. Once I realized I was wrong, I then thought it was an iPad with controls. Which was a dream come true since so many iPad games are messed up due to on screen controls only. They are begging for someone to put a controller on that device. Being able to to turn off my TV and play a game on the Wii U Gamepad is awesome. Having to stay within ninety feet of my Wii U is lame. I want to take this on the go. I want to play it in the car, on the bus, whatever. The Wii U Gamepad is tied down, which hurts it.

Increase Battery Life Span

The few hours of game play we get out of a Wii U Gamepad is lame. My Wii U Gamepad spends more time on the charger than anything else. The battery life span is way too low for a tablet like controller. There are peripherals that can be added on to increase the life span, but they are clunky, and make the Wii U Gamepad too heavy. Nintendo needs to find a way to increase the battery life span. At times I would like to turn the screen off on the Wii U Gamepad – but that option is not available to me. It should be, and that would help increase the battery life span.

Lower the Price

You would be amazed at how many people I talk to that baulk at the price of the Wii U. To be blunt and honest; if it was not for needing to cover games on this system – I would have waited for a price drop. Nintendo has tried some reward programs with the Wii U, but they are not catching on. Maybe if they let people trade in their Wii's for a reduced price Wii U it would catch on better. NEC earned all kinds of crazy loyalty with that business strategy back in the 16-bit era. The Nintendo 3DS started with lackluster sales, and Nintendo dropped the price to move units. They need to do the same thing with the Wii U.

Change the name

I may be one of the few people who likes the name of the Wii U. So why am I saying they need to change the name? The average family gamer has no idea the Wii U is different from the Wii. I have helped numerous people in stores, and through email exchanges. They did not understand the Wii U was an all new machine. Some even tried to play Wii U games on their Wii home consoles. Nintendo has created too much confusion with this name. They need to re-brand this puppy if they hope to educate the consumer.

I must say, I do agree quite a bit. (I don't own the system, but I understand what you mean.)

Haha, though I admit you kinda startled me when you said "Port over DS/3DS titles" :P
at first I was thinking you meant "buying 3/DS game and playing them on the Wii U without even owning a 3DS,"
but then you mentioned the GBA & Gamecube add on, then everything made begain to make sense.

Although as far as making the Gamepad on the go, that sounds quite tricky.
I think there might be a lot of lag to be had at a long distance.
(Although I am not quite sure in what way the Gamepad connects to the Wii U,
it just uses a simple local wireless connection right?)

I see how longer battery life is always a welcomed thing,
I wonder does it have a power save option like the 3DS?

So they actually didn't have a Wii trade in?
I am actually quite surprised.

Yeah, I guess I see how the word "Wii" in the name can be misleading,
though I think it may be to late to give a name change. (With everything released for the Wii U having the label "Wii U".)
Though they could at least place some text on Wii U items, saying that it's not compatable with the wii, and what not.
Be part of the answer, not part of the problem.

They need to lower the price of the games, I refuse to pay $60 for a Wii U game when I can get the PC version much cheaper

FFG, you seem to misunderstand something that is almost vital to Nintendo. More often then not, all Nintendos have rocky starts. The 3DS is just picking up speed. There are more new titles being developed for it year by year, it only took Nintendo and company awhile to efficiently increase it's library. And don't even CONSIDER developement of a way to use the Wii-U to play 3DS/DS games. If it were possible, don't you think Nintendo would have done it already?! The name, since when has changing the name of something been considered economically sound? If it were really as easy as you'd like it to believe, then they would have done it. I hate the name too, it sounds stupid and childish, and the name Nintendo Siren sounds even better in my honest opinion. The price on the other hand, that is completely viable.

Honestly, if they continue in the same path that had occured with the 3DS. I think it's safe to say that the Wii-U WILL succeed.

Me and a few friends thought they should've named it the "Super Wii". The name implies an upgrade on the previous system while also implying that it is a separate system (after all, this worked with the Super NES). Plus a nice call back to the older days would be groovy. But as JOJ650s pointed out, its too late for a name change. Maybe when they do a "Wii U slim" they could slap on a new title.

My problem with the Wii U is that their launch could've been way better. Giving us a collection of mini-games and a rehash of Super Mario Bros Wii, for example, was annoying. But their partnership with Sega for exclusive Sonic games will make the system a must-by for me.

Plus, a friend pointed out to me that this gray area of DRM's and always online stuff with Sony and Microsoft isn't even an issue with the Wii U. The system is already out, so we can already see how the system will treat used games. In general, Nintendo is very traditional in many ways (for better or for worse) and in this case, it gives the Wii U a great advantage.

Removed long, drawn out story about going to the grocery store that had no relation to this thread and don't bother PMing me for it, because I've blocked it out of my memory~LAVA89

JOJ650s,
Thanks. :) I am trying to improve. :) All I usually see are my mistakes, and wish I did not sound so clunky.

Nintendo could do both. A small USB adapter to plug in existing games. And then let us download them on the eShop. Since an account can be the same on the 3DS and Wii U; then theoretically when you download on one machine you could download on another. You bring up a good point - what if someone did not have a 3DS or DS? It would be cool to have the option to play it on the Wii U without one of those systems. That may not make the best business sense.

Removing the teether is more of a dream. The Wii U Gamepad would need memory to house the game being played, and that would increase the price. It would be an awesome feature that would sell systems. I agree - its doubtful it will happen.

I don't know of a power save option on the Wii U Gamepad. The system will shut down after an hour of inactivity. That can be turned off, since downloads can take longer than an hour. One of my issues is I can have the game showing on the Gamepad and the TV screen. I can turn the TV off, but what if I want it to go the other direction? I have yet to find a way to use the Wii U Gamepad as just a controller. Now that is where the other controller can come into play. Bear in mind it depends on the game too. Some games are different in what controllers they allow, what shows on the Wii U Gamepad, etc.

Gamestop may have done something at launch. I am talking about Nintendo doing something. NEC had an offer to all Turbografx-16 owners. Mail them a check for something like a hundred dollars, and your old system. They mailed back a Turboduo. They upgraded you. I doubt Nintendo would do this. If they did it would be awesome, and seriously push the Wii U. Imagine Wii owners being offered the upgraded system.

I am personally baffled by this - even though I have run into it a lot. The colors of the boxes are different. Yet I have met/been emailed too many people who did not understand. Maybe if all the Wiis had been pulled from stores. I don't know. I know this idea has little chance of happening too. :)

ccgr,
Good point. :) Too often new systems get tons of ports. If you played the game on another system why pay for it a second time, and at such a high dollar price. For a few new levels, characters, etc. I would love to see Players Choice come back. *sigh* Nintendo is usually slow with stuff like that. I expect a Wii U price drop right before the PS4 and Xbox One launches. It would be nice if games were a part of that. :)

I have to confess I am a bit spoiled when it comes to this. The only Wii U games I have bought are Lego City Undercover, and Monster Hunter 3. Fifty and sixty respectively. I did find both to be overpriced. And I have no plans on personally purchasing anything anytime soon.

LAVA89,
Super Wii would be awesome, and it makes a lot of sense. :) YOU ROCK!!!!

I like and agree with most of your comments except this one, which I found odd....

If you want a portable game system, then why not simply purchase a portable game system? It seems to me almost as if you'd want the Gamepad to work with the console in the same way an iPad works with a computer.

Something that might be keeping me from getting a Wii U is launch titles. I mean the only game I might want is New Super Mario Bros. U. Another thing is I have Wii and it play Wii games, Gamecube games, and Virtual Console games.
And if I sold the Wii to get a Wii U I would lose the option to play hundreds of classics. I would like to see Nintendo put a bunch of their library available for download which would be neat, maybe.

Yeah, lets face it, the Wii U's launch flat out...sucked. Its the worst launch I've seen from Nintendo. And I'm saying this as someone is more likely going to buy a Wii U as opposed to PS4 or XB1.

Yeah definitely keep your Wii! And wait for the Wii U to go down in price instead (if you plan on getting it). I learned the hard way about selling consoles.

LAVA89 ,
The Virtual Boy has a horrible launch, and so did the Gamecube actually. Although the Virtual Boy has to be Nintendo's worst launch of all time. :)

Just saying.

How about they remake Gamecube games for Wii U?
