Time Magazine has released its list of what it says are the 100 greatest video games of all time. Not too many surprises to me here. How many of these have you played? I counted 46 myself....

I knew most of the games, but I can't help but feel a tinge of disgust for these lists. If they said something along the lines of "TIME's favorite games" I would let it slide, but this isn't such a cut and dry topic.

Glad it wasn't a list in order. Its to the point where I can bet money on Super Mario Bros or Pong being #1 whenever IGN does a top 100 games list.

Not that they're bad games, its just always the same thing.

Are there any games you think should be on the list? Or perhaps not on the list?

When I try to think of a list of "greatest games of all time" I try to factor in historical and cultural significance. Did the game break new ground in terms of technology? Did it worm its way into popular culture to become a common house name? Certainly a game that became famous because it was so awesomely bad should NOT make the list (e.g. E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Custer's Revenge).

Some of the games I would have chosen - Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Space Invaders - did make it onto the list. And yes, some of the games on that list made me think the author was choosing his (or her) own favorites (Flower? That was the only game on the list I had never heard of before...). And I would have preferred seeing Morrowind over Oblivion, and it would have been nice to see Star Raiders or Choplifter on the list as well. But all around, I thought the Time list was pretty solid.

It was the game that initially came bundled with the Wii and helped to catapult Nintendo back to the top of the console wars. Not the best Wii game, but still a significant one. I'd let it slide.

I hardly think it's at the top of the console wars. Maybe kind of for a while, but it's kind of become the lonely uncle of the 3 consoles

I actually really see what you mean. Nintendo adopted Sony's previous marketing strategy as being the casual game developer. A move that I thought was brilliant.

The Wii U on the other hand.....I just hope they can market their tablet gimmick as well as they did with the Wii. Gimmicks can only do so well on their own if you don't market it right. The Wii had both the motion controls and casual image going for it.

I'm not a big fan of it myself. But from a marketing aspect, it makes sense. The Xbox has taken the Sega Genesis' place as the console for hard core gamers (in terms of image, I think the PC is the true system for hard core gamers). And buying Nintendo consoles to play just Nintendo games obviously didn't bring in the revenue they wanted with the Gamecube.

I used to consider myself a hard core game. But as I've gotten older, gotten busier with work, got kids... there's just less time for gaming with so many other responsibilities to attend to. I obviously still have a keen interest in video games - and the game industry as a whole - but consider myself to be more of a casual gamer than anything. For me, a quick 30 minute game session every few days is a fun little indulgence that I feel lucky to get. I just don't have time to spend three to six hours a day gunning down aliens or backstabbing dragons like I used to.

Basically, I can see it from both ends of the spectrum. As much as I enjoyed hard core gaming, I can't do it any more. Games where I can spend a few minutes having fun and still feel like I made some form of progress will be more likely to get my money. Probably one of the main reasons why I have a Wii and not a PS3... and yet, still play most of my games on the computer.

I think flower deserved to be on that list, however it may be replaced by journey, or at least journey added to the list too.

If you look at it not from a game quality perspective but a defining game of a genre I think Wii sports deserves to be there. Yes it is a stupid game (I hate loosing to people, and with Wii sports controls there isn't much technique so its easy to loose). But the sheer amount of Wii sports clones that have come out through the Wii's life cycle indicate it's place as a genre defining game.

I'm surprised at least one of the older FF games didn't make the cut. The first one was hardly one of the most polished games of the series, but it was one of the earliest examples of a JRPG.
