Don't want to get into depth, but I've noticed that the Christian music that gets the most popularity is the kind that seems to reference God but could be interpreted in a different way. Looking at bands like Skillet and Switchfoot, people get surprised when I tell them they're both Christian bands.
Not that they're bad, but it's obvious they do that for popularity, unless I'm mistaken.
Not saying anything about Toby Mac, because I don't follow any of his music. I love DC Talk, though.

I can't speak for Skillet, but I've seen Switichfoot in concert and got to hear a lot of Jon Foreman's heart.
The reason a lot of Switchfoot's lyrics aren't explicitly christian is because he writes a lot from his struggles and where his heart is. Music is a form of expression, and shows the soul the same as even poetry. He uses it as such. Foreman's music is more about God's story for him, and him discovering that story. It's not a pretty version of Christianity you'll get from a worship album.
I highly suggest you listen to his Seasons EP albums. He has one for each season. Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Those specifically show more of his Christianity and his relationship with God.

I think the reason these bands exist is because we can't talk about Jesus without first acknowledging the human condition. My guess. Emery, for example. Their music seems to reflect manhood and how Jesus described submission to Him as a marriage. Just saying.
“The humble sinner will sometimes be interpreted as one of the filthiest in the eyes of man yet immersed in the eyes of God, and this is due to the volition of honesty regarding his own corruption.”

Interesting thought.
I also think that straight-up worship music is difficult to just listen to unless you're in a worshipful mood. Most (like I said, most. there are always exceptions) bands who play primarily worship music have simpler music and simpler (and often repetitive) lyrics. It's great for a concert hall packed with worshipers and the very air is thick with the presence of God, but, let's face it, it makes for dull general listening unless you REALLY REALLY want to worship alone in your car. Which, don't get me wrong, is totally fine. I just prefer to rock out in my car and every Mark Schultz song is in the same frickin key and follows the same pattern o_o
Skillet, Switchfoot, etc. all have more relatable lyrics whose meaning goes beyond "God is awesome." There are times when I want to say that God is awesome, and there's sometimes when life just really sucks and I want to hear a song that acknowledges that life isn't always flowers and cookies. It's bands who can offer more to us as listeners that become "#1 Billboard Chart Hit" bands.
And, of course, I'm not saying that every band needs to do that. There's a time and place for every kind of music, and worship albums don't need to top charts to be validated.

And then there's Theocracy, which burns your ears with screaming awesome while still being very worshipful.
What does that have to do with anything? Nothing. But it does, perhaps, question the typical 7/11 label applied to worship songs. ^_^

If you look at my signatures, you will find three examples. I think they go well with my signature. What do you think?

That's cool. I'm looking at getting Eye on It.
