I love how VALVe takes risks with the FPS genre - Counter Strike being so strict and high-action, Team Fortress 2 being more generous, balanced, and enriched with personality, Half-Life being the greatest innovations to gaming in a LONG time, and Left 4 Dead with it's rip on every zombie movie ever made. Is Portal even a shooter?
Team Fortress 2 is my favorite shooter.

Compared to all of the games that came out around that time, like Call of Duty 4 and.. uhm. Yeah. I think Team Fortress 2 is, bar none, the best shooter that came out in this generation. In terms of skill, fun and uniqueness, Team Fortress 2 is at the top.
My 561 hours played says more than enough about how I feel about the game.
I just wish the game was back to being the way it was before all the updates. I loved playing as underpowered Pyro and being at the top of the scoreboard. Really sucks how people call you a noob for playing as Pyro these days, thanks to all of the buffs.

Seeing as I've tossed some 381 hours into it, I feel likewise. VALVe does something to a shooter that other developers don't get. They don't make games - they make art.

blood yes, don't remember on language. our TF2 server has the blood disabled and confetti comes out instead

There's a bit of language from the characters, i.e. D word and I think the scout says Jacka**....
Other than that it's really fun.
