Shooting games- What is it that makes them so popular?

Great for talking hardware, hype, and games outside traditional genres.

I like shooting games. I don't really play them, but I like them. I simply must know.......

What makes shooting games so great?

Also, I have PS3 and Wii (PS Vita and 3DS coming soon for me :D ). Can someone give me some titles to try out while you're at it?

But answer my question first, please.

I only play FPS's on PC. Unreal games are just great the modes are fun and the challenge of working your way to #1 is rewarding

In my opinion, the original Unreal Tournament is one of the best arena shooters around, but I would be biased towards it.

The big deal with Unreal is the engines they make. They power so many other games, and they really bring some sweet stuff to the table. Check out the Unreal 4 engine demo:

Keep in mind, most all of these effects are dynamically generated by the engine and not pre-animated like you see in a lot of games.
It's more than just how realistic the object looks (which is still great). Look at the particles and lighting. Really impressive.

Now, imagine a Sonic game made the fullest extent in this engine. :P

It's fun to shoot stuff. On some level, it's fun to kill stuff. Violence is fun.

It's not supposed to be fun. It never solved anything. True, I play games with violence. Even so......

Actually, despite the chant they teach people today, violence solves, and has solved, plenty over the years. Far more than diplomacy. Whether or not it's the best way is up for debate, but not that it solves things.

And yeah, killing isn't supposed to be fun. But it is. Especially in a game, where the only blood and loss of life are digital.

Well, at least he isn't saying that they cause people to murder. Otherwise I'd have to reference this:

That said, here's why I like shooter games. They provide an adrenaline rush that not many other genres provide. They usually have fun multiplayer, some have good stories, and most usually make the experience fun. The Unreal games are usually great for LAN parties because of how optimized the experience is. Little lag, smooth control, effective weapons.

The best reason why most people like them? Because they find them fun. Can't really go deeper than that without breaking into horribly divisive psychological studies.

You could if this wasn't the internet. Most of the time, people in real life don't have to try and sound smart by bringing up some obscure scientists findings. :P

Simplicity, I favor it. People like to kill stuff, and people like being action heroes. That second part is why I like them.

Now see, I have no idea what exactly you were referring to. XD

Those 'psychological findings' you were talking about. They really only come into squabbles on the internet.

Oh, it's true. Off the net, it's kind of a free-for-all. No one can provide any solid proof either way. XD

I find shooting games fun myself (even though all I have are demos from PSN  ) and even though I fail constantly trying to be stealthy (at times) and get shot at more times than Chuck Norris with his BB gun, I still like the challenge and cinematic depth of it all. But only if I'm a secret agent or a soldier in a war. I refuse to play games such as Grand Theft Auto and other shooting games I find bad and uninteresting. :|

Shooting games in themselves are ridiculous, but I understand. I'm thinking about Renting Sleeping Dogs from GameFly when it comes out, because the main character is an undercover cop that faces temptation. The temptation causing him to decide to continue being a cop or go back to the old way of his life. Seen the Demo on YouTube. Pretty deep. Also very violent and crazy to n extent. Just think of it like the street combination of James Bond, Gears of War, inFAMOUS and Call of Duty: Black Ops or Modern Warfare. Only it takes place in Shanghai, China.

Well, it's not that killing is fun. You don't actually kill in video games and your brain knows this.
It's combat that's fun; wired right into our biology.
