I lean toward RTS. Only turn base strategy I've ever been able to get into is Chess.
Perhaps because fast action appeals to me more than having to second guess a virtual opponent.

It's basically a turn-based empire building type thing, then battles fought in real time.

Turn based. The Shining Force series is top of the line for me in that regard. Final Fantasy Tactics is on the bottom.

I feel obligated to point out that "Real Time" is still turn based, but it makes turns without your consent at a rate near a couple thousand turns per second.

And I love both. Real Time has Warcraft, and Turn Based has Civilization. Both are incredible.

One of the problems I have with real time strategy is many of them have bad controls in my opinion. Strategies normally degenerate into swarming attacks - both on offense and defense.
Whereas in turn based there can be more intricate strategies especially in fog of war levels.
