I know this game has been around for a little while, it\'s under the $20 range so I picked it up with some extra Christmas money. I\'d say it\'s well worth the investment. If you like comic books or super heroes this game is a must buy. The character origins and voice acting makes this game feel like you\'re truly in a comic book!
Game Modes
The single player campaign is what makes this game so fun. Energy X had been sent to planet earth in hopes to have it destroy itself. This Energy X makes super heroes and villians alike. Who will win? Will the earth be doomed? Who will join Freedom Force to save the planet? With each character you get to join Freedom Force you can learn about their origin and how they came into contact with Energy X. Many of the stories are quite humorous. You have your typical Commies, beautiful girls, and war heroes. Other than the single player campaign there\'s a danger room addition with the patch. This mod allows you to play levels with floods of enemies coming your way. As usual you get to select your party. Finally there\'s multiplayer mode where you get to select your group of super heroes and fight another group.
Creating your own super heroes
When you create your own heroes you get the typical set of attributes like strength, energy, speed, agility, and endurance. You can then choose what they will look like and name them. To make them unique you can give them special powers. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses. For example you can assign your character beauty, danger sense, flying, crawling, extra heroic, crack shot, heavy lifter etc. For ammunition, some are better at close range and others for distance. Usually a character can have multiple attack weapons or maneuvers. Some attacks may be good for one enemy and other attacks can hit multiple bad guys at once. All the typical elements are used like fire, ice, electricity, radiation etc. You can also add weaknesses to your character to make them a little cheaper to add to your party.
Addons?
Freedom Force has many additions to the game. There are a wide variety of skins you can grab. For example I have Austin Powers, Blade, Spiderman, Sub Zero, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Terminator, etc. Some of the skins are better designed than others. Many have their own effects and special moves. There are some mods and voice packs you can add into the game. The tools are readily downloadable. In other words this game is quite expandable.
Appropriate?
There is violence in the game. It\'s typical comic book violence, you\'ll see the cartoon bubbles with BAM! POW! WHAM! etc. You are mostly battling villains and thugs. You have a prestige level which you need to keep high, so it pays to be good and help out people in danger. To boost your morale you can do things like save a woman\'s purse from thugs, rid bad guys etc. Like many typical comic heroes there are some female outfits that are lacking. The male super heroes seemed fine from what I saw. (Both parties sometimes wear tights.) Magic can be used by characters, it\'s not required, after all you can customize super heroes and choose your party. When your characters are under a spell you\'ll have a 5 pointed star by their profile. Christianity is not mentioned in this game but other religions are portrayed. There\'s a character named Eve who\'s very in tune with the earth and its balance. Often times she\'ll cry out to Gaia. Another character Alchemiss got her Energy X powers from a \'goddess\'.
Overall experienceEase of use
The game is easy to install. The graphics are very colorful and you get a third person view when controlling your characters. You can zoom in and out to get more detail. The 3D rendering is very good. The voice acting and sound effects are perfect. The musical score in the background is awesome. It definitely seems like a talking comic book! For controls you mainly use the mouse. You can select the action you want to take and then select your target. You can use anything in the world environment. You can pickup light posts, throw cars, wreck buildings, etc. The game ran very stable, I didn\'t experience any lock ups or glitches. There is a patch out for the full game. This is a real cute game and it\'s fun. I just wish there were less religious references.
