Everdream Valley takes place on your grandparents’ farm. The daily chores and property upkeep is getting to be a bit much for them so your help is very much appreciated. Your first order of business is to design your character. There are no options to set your gender, but you can make your character look masculine or feminine with their hair style and facial marks.
Once your character is designed you’ll see a cutscene of your mother dropping you off and briefly chatting with your grandmother. After she drives off its your job to clean up the farm by picking up the litter, mending fences, and locating the farm animals that have wandered away as a result.
Along with the side quests your grandparents give you, there are also ones that progress the storyline. The story related quests have an exclamation point indicating their importance. As you discover new fields and clear away the fog from the world map, you stumble across fields that need the litter cleaned up and flowers planted. Your grandparents will give you quests to charm and bring back new types of animals to their farm including goats, alpacas, pigs, and horses.
Strong Points: Charming gameplay and colorful visuals
Weak Points: Game breaking glitches; confusing and inconsistent terminology; multiplayer is dead
Moral Warnings: Cartoon violence
We streamed Everdream Valley close to when it launched in 2023. I remember getting a little confused by one of the quests towards the end of them stream. I decided to wait for guides to come out as some of the quests were not clear. I ran across name mismatches where a quest asks you to craft a certain item but it’s named differently. For example you need to build an animal feeder to deter the deer from eating your vegetables but the blueprint labels it as a pasture. Another example has an item calling for planks which confuses players not knowing that boards are what it’s referring to.
To craft items, you’ll have to make sure that you have the necessary components. There’s a shop near the farm that often has items available at a premium if you don’t have the time to source them yourself. He’s also willing to buy items you no longer need. I highly recommend buying extra inventory slots.
Everydream Valley is broken down into day and night cycles. At night wolves come out and will attack you onsite if you’re out wandering. If you’re attacked, you’ll wake up thinking it was a bad dream. To avoid the wolves, you can pitch a tent and sleep soundly if you’re too far from your grandparents to make it back in time. After completing quests you’ll unlock story progressing dreams. Through these dreams you’re able to communicate with and understand the plight of various creatures in the valley.

Later in the game you’ll get to build a treehouse and you can furnish it with furniture, aquariums, terrariums, and more. After erecting a scarecrow at your grandmother’s request you’ll be able to randomly select dream mini-games to replay. Completing the dream minigames is required for story progression, but after that you’ll earn loot from doing them again. Some of the dream games are more enjoyable than others. Thankfully, you can skip them if desired. Many of the farming mini-games are optional as well. Auto collecting wood, wool, milk, and board is possible, but you get double the yield by collecting them via mini-games.
After twenty-five hours of playing Everdream Valley I experienced a game-breaking bug that prevents me from completing the game. I was close to the end, but haven’t been able to see the ending. The only moral concern is that there is some cartoon violence with the annoying geese and the night wolves. Early in the game you’ll get a wooden sword to defend yourself.
Four player co-op is available for PC players, but according to Steam discussions it’s pretty buggy. I did not find any servers to join so I can’t comment. I’m happy to see that there is free DLC available and the soundtrack is available for purchase. I found the background music pleasant to listen to, but nothing worth owning.
While Everdream Valley is charming and fun, it’s hard to recommend a game that I can’t complete due to ongoing bugs. The asking price is fair, but I would hold off for a sale and ideally more patching before buying.
