Once upon a time there was a devil lord who fell in love with a goddess in Heaven.  Wanting to profess his love to her, he sent a messenger demon, Rhymi, to deliver a letter and a rose to her.     Not thrilled, but obedient, the defenseless Rhymi sets out on her journey.

There are only two controls needed to get Rhymi going. On the bottom 3DS screen, you can tap the Move or Turn circles.  They do as they describe if you do it in rhythm to the background music.  If you’re offbeat Rhymi will stop and stick out her tongue at you.  

The first couple of levels familiarize you with the controls and collectibles.  Although you were sent with one rose, you can gather up to three more per level for a perfect clear.  If you collect five pink musical notes you gain an extra life.  Gold notes exist, but they are exceedingly rare.  If you trigger one, it puts you into an invincible Pac-Man like mode where you can trample your enemies for a few seconds.  

Without the Gold note’s help, you must avoid the enemies at all cost.  You’ll have to time your movements to go under frogs as they jump, dodge ravens as they fly, and avoid the holy stares of guardian angels.  This wouldn’t be so bad if you could be patient and time things right.  In some levels you can, but in many you cannot because of cats.  Cats in this game will slowly follow you and kill you when they catch up to you.  The dogs aren't so bad; all they do is knock you into the direction of their bark.  Annoying yes, but not as frustrating as the cats are in this game.  

There are thirty levels in the campaign, and some time attack levels to sharpen your skills on.  I beat this game in a few sittings but if you want to collect every rose or beat your timed scores there is some replay value here.  The asking price of $3.99 is very reasonable as this is a fun and a well polished game.

I love the anime style art and the catchy background music.  There is some violence since you can die, but it’s all cartoonish and not gory.  If you don’t mind the demon/goddess love story this game is kid friendly.  Currently Groove Heaven is only available on Nintendo’s eShop. I wonder if it will be ported to smart phones.  If not, it’s one of the few exclusives that make me a proud 3DS owner.
