How many art points do you need to be able to make creations of beauty like these? I'm interested.

Really, fine and polished works of art.

Thanks! (But that's a Heavy Bolter. A Storm Bolter is way smaller. :D )

Thanks! I'm not sure what you mean by art points... My training in art is minimal, I've just been doing this off and on since I was 14. The best way to learn is to just do it, and get tips from sites like CoolMiniOrNot and check out their articles... Lots of great tutorials. BrushThralls is really awesome too.

The second Tactical Squad. 5 man unit sporting Forge World Mk V power armor. The sergeant is upgraded into a Librarian per the 30K campaign rules and wields a combi-melta and a force weapon.

What's the general cost, including the figures and necessary tools?

Funny you ask. My son, my wife and I were discussing this earlier. Different games have different investments in money to get rolling. Per miniature, Warhammer is the cheapest, but it takes a LOT of minis to play a Warhammer game, so the result is that it has a much higher cost associated with it. Depending on which game and what size army you want to build, it can cost anywhere from $200 to about $500 to get rolling. That doesn't include paint and stuff, but that's not too much.

The shameful thing about that is, I think I actually went back and reread your post to check. XD

Shame. But the new figures look amazing. Is that the traditional Thousand Sons chapter theme, or one you created?

Hmm. Better buy the cheap paint then.

Warmachine is a bit cheaper, I think. Requires less models/dice to play, and the rule book is only $30 (half the price of a Warhammer rulebook).

In fact, (though I know not if they are good; Arctic may could tell you) you can grab a Warmachine faction starter box off of Amazon for $30 or so.

I'm actually back to considering Warmachine, for the record Arctic. Flippity floppity goes teh Chozons. I mean...at this point, I've only put about $10 into Warhammer, so I'd not feel bad about changing.

Hmm beginner price, I like it.

Actually, just a completely different game made by different creators. More of a Steampunkish feel.

The Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons chapter theme isn't really fixed in any fluff or illustration... Seems like the basic crimson armor with white or gold trim is more or less locked in but different artists draw them a little differently, so what I did was to use each different scheme for different unit types... So the Tactical Squads will have white borders on their shoulder pads, the Assault Squad has gold, etc. Of course, the post-Heresy color scheme is well known, being blue armor with gold or yellow trim.

Warmachine is a LOT cheaper to get into. Chozon is right... fewer models. The models themselves cost more, but you can have a complete, battle-ready Warmachine force for a little over half what it would cost to get started in Warhammer. If you're more of a fantasy type person than sci-fi, you can go Hordes, which is the monsters and wizards version of Warmachine and the games are completely interchangeable... In other words, if you have a Hordes army and your friend has a Warmachine army, you can play each other just fine.

Privateer Press, the company that created Warmachine/Hordes, is aggressively promoting their product through competitive pricing, visibility at events, one year they even went so far as to give away free starter boxes to every player that had entered a Warhammer 40K Tournament... They're very customer friendly, have really good content in their magazine ("No Quarter") and generally seem to be going for quality. Their models are getting better, having had some rough quality at first. Some of their kits are being re-released in a higher quality plastic that's easier to work with. I love Warhammer, but Warmachine is growing on me fast, even though I've only ever played 2 games (But my record is 2-0-0  )
