I just programmed something in C++

Really? Starting you on VB? Terrible. It's just an awkwardly formatted language.

Honestly, despite my banter with ArcticFox, Java is one of the best languages to start learning with (and good enough to use the throughout your career, too).

ACtually, they're staring me on programming concepts, micro-computer applications and other garglemesh like that. Visual Basic is...huh...may actually be second year, not second semester. Interesting. I should go grab the bulletin thingum.

VB should go the way of COBOL and FORTRAN. There's no reason why you should use VB when you can do it in C#.

I just follow the curriculum.

And then do things the better way on the internet at home for free.

If I didn't want a piece of paper on my wall, I bet a few hundred dollars worth of books and computer equipment could give me the same amount of knowledge.

Of course, then I'd have to also set a schedule for myself, and I know how that'd turn out. XD

You'll learn most of the stuff by going out and just doing it, whether on the job or independent development. Classroom learning might give you some fundementals on OOP and software design principles, but all in all, I found it to be a bit wasteful of time.

I took VB a few years ago. Kinda wish I hadn't, and had taken C++ or something instead. Totally messed me up when I tried to figure out C#.

I had to do a decent amount of VB work and it set me back a step on organically writing in C style. I mean, who indexes an array with parentheses? Who does that!?!

I don't know, but the class moved so slowly that we didn't even really get to arrays. :)
