PS Vita- Can someone tell me about it?

Great for talking hardware, hype, and games outside traditional genres.

Yes...but remember that the reason is because they're out to make money, and pretty much nothing else. I'm out to learn. :P most emulation fans are out to experience nostalgia. So if you want to be perfectly legal, go right ahead and don't emulate. Just know that you've probably already broken other more serious laws before anyway. :P

Also, I feel like I should point out that the Virtual Console is emulation. just because. >_>

And at any rate, you gotta give the people who program emulators credit: Those things are dang hard to write. O_o

Well, I should mention that hacking will make your console unable to go online. At least with the PS3, you can't play online anymore. With the PSP, you can't play certain newer games. But if you're out to learn how this stuff is done, I recommend these sites: A good guide on the process for PSP hacking. A decent list of tutorials on various CFW-related subjects.

I'd also recommend Google. I honestly can't remember most of the sites I've used (Or even if they're still around)...

Now that I can load programs on the system (And don't have to pay ridiculous licensing fees since I'm not talking about games), I can list myself as being familiar with the hardware and system architecture. That's a potential resume booster.

I did a similar thing with the original Xbox. Hacked it to run a modified version of Ubuntu. I use it on my resume because I now can say I know more about embedded systems than most other people my age.

Now I direct you to my soap box rant:
Deepfreeze32 wrote: I hacked my PSP plenty of times. Wrote some custom code for it (Which has apparently been lost in a recent file migration :/), ripped my UMD's to my memory stick for fasting loading times, etc.
Do you understand that? Flash memory loads waaayyyy faster than the UMD. So by ripping a game from a UMD, I now have a game that loads faster.

Now for ccgr's point: Emulation. Emulation can be a tricky issue in some places. For example, PS1 emulation on a computer can be sticky because to properly emulate the system, you must have a copy of the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). This cannot legally be obtained without ripping it from your console. No ifs ands or buts for this scenario.

HOWEVER. The PSP has the emulation software built into the system. The CFW (Custom Firmware) allows the user to run the emulation software on any PS1 game that they place on the memory stick. The reason why Sony doesn't officially support this is because (And I'm sure ccgr can attest to this as well) the emulation is far from perfect for a lot of titles. Plenty of problems far and wide. Some are minor (Like graphics glitches or audio crackling), but some are huge (like refusing to boot).

Your point mon capitan? It could easily be said that all anti-theft laws are simply for people to make money. There's also a good portion of people out there who simply don't want to pay for their games, so the point that emu fans are out to 'learn' or to have copies of games they already own doesn't fly, even if it's true for you (and I believe it is, for the record).

Nor that 'emu fans are out to experience nostalgia' since 70-80 percent of popular ye olde games are out for legit download on modern systems; they just happen to require you to pay for them. That's not even really an issue for emulation either. To add onto that, it's not kosher that because I've, say, sped over the speed limit, that other less illegal things are OK. :P

So go ahead and emulate; just don't try to rationalize it into being not borderline illegal because of 'insert reasons'. XD

But for the record, there are some PSP CFW's that don't jank with stuff, I believe. At least, they haven't with mine. I don't play a lot of newer games though.

For the record, I think emulation laws are annoying and generally hurt the honest people more than the 'pirates', and need to be changed or tweaked a bit (fair use aside, it'd be nice to have a leg to stand on if it hit court); I just get grumpy at the 'NO DUDES LAWL ITS SO LEGAL' type of arguments. :D

Well Reedeemed,
I suggest to not jump into hacking your PSP,
unless your really ready to.
Be part of the answer, not part of the problem.

This is a PSX, the correct abbrieviation for the PlayStation is PS or PS1. (...I have no life...)

Moving back to the conversation, hacking a psp does have quite a few benefits, if you're willing to give up online play.

The PSX...... heard of it but what does that have to do with a hacked PSP?

That's actually incorrect.

The model of PSX that you're showing there was a DVR-based Playstation 2 released in Japan around 2003.

The term "PSX" referring to the original Playstation was around prior to that, making both the correct term, though one is official and the other isn't.

It's kinda like saying that anything but "NGC" when referring to the Gamecube is incorrect, since that's Nintendo's official, preferred abbreviation.

Yes, but it would be like referring to the Wii as the Revolution. It was called that, but only during the process of making it. PSX stood for PlayStation Experimental, but since there is now a system with the official name of PSX, it can be confusing.
The PSX has nothing to do with hacking a PSP. I just wanted to point out that PSX actually stands for something else because I have no life...:( However, hacking a PSP allows you to play games that you normally wouldn't be able to play. (unfortunately, pirates tend to take advantage of that)
