It didn't particularly bother me, I just don't think it has a place here.

Previous political jokes that have been posted here have felt pretty disrespectful to me as well, which is why I tend to avoid this thread.

That joke basically says that Democrats don't "get" Jesus' love/forgiveness/grace because they're "exploiting" the economy and the system.

That feels really disrespectful and contrary to the message of a Christian site.

I'd like to note that while I wasn't particularly offended by the joke (I just wanted a chance to use that picture >.> ) I do agree with Drew that it's asking for trouble to risk rustling the proverbial bushes with those kinds of jokes. We thankfully have a lot of opinions on this site, both political and spiritual, and I'd hope that either side would be able to say "hey now, that's a bit excessive" when we're uncomfortable with a joke. So definitely no hard feelings by me.

All I'm pushing for is a bit of clarity about what we (as a community) might consider to be offensive when the situation arises. I just don't like seeing one side crack a joke that offends another person and have it countered with "YEAH WELL YOU MAKE THE SAME JOKES" If that's the case, we need to find some common ground and not get in a hissy fit.

And I should note that the gif Drew is referencing is this one:



It was a while back, and I talked to the moderator who removed it about the whole thing. We worked it out and he was basically just confused about whether or not it was inappropriate. I think this arose from the conflict surrounding my posting of things referencing men's this-and-that (I'm struggling to find an appropriate term here) and getting into trouble for it (which I've apologized for, I might add). That was in turn caused by own confusion, given that I've seen this-and-that referred to in some way or another on the site without any repercussions. Granted, I pushed the envelope more than anyone, but still.

So I think Drew's point is that there's a lot of confusion about what is and isn't appropriate. You get extreme cases being tolerated and minor cases getting loads of attention. I wouldn't say this is an extreme case, however tactless I may consider the joke to be, but it might illustrate that issue a bit.

Anyways, since this is turning into another drama thread, I felt like lightening the mood up with a joke:

Mrs Green was walking to the post office when her neighbor came up to her and said "Hello Janis, How’s your dog? I saw her yesterday chasing an old man on a bike."

"Oh" said Mrs Green "That could NOT have been my dog"

"Oh, why not?" replied her neighbor "I’m pretty sure it was her"

"Well" stated Mrs. Green smiling "my dog doesn’t ride a bike"

My interpretation is that politicians are corrupt and exploiting the system...that can go for any political party and has nothing to do with salvation (everyone needs that no matter how you align yourself politically)

Moving on, I will try and avoid political jokes in the future.

I don't think it's necessarily about it being a "political" joke or even possibly offending people. I've always been a firm believer that nobody has a right to not be offended and offensive content can be incredibly beneficial to a society. South Park would not be such great satire if not for the offensive content. When something's offensive, it shocks people and jars them from their preconceived notions; this has great use.

But offensive material should not be offensive to be offensive (unless, of course, that point is part of a large point of the necessity of offensive material....). I'll admit, I didn't like the joke. I didn't dislike it because I felt someone might get offended; if they did, they can just bugger off. Let's face it, very few things will not offend at least someone. If someone gets offended, that's their business, not ours. We don't have to pander our speech to their sensibilities. But our business is making sure the point and the attitude behind it is meaningful, and not cruel. I didn't like the joke because I felt like it perpetuated a misunderstood and misguided view of democrats. No joke has to be fully accurate, it'll cease to be a joke at that point, but the crux of the joke was that democrats are cheaters and frauds, when that's not necessarily the case. I mean, politicians are, but many of the people sincerely believe in their advocated ideas. It wasn't accurate and it didn't give a biting, thoughtful outtake.

If the quality/propriety of jokes is to be debated, please take it to a separate thread in a separate section. If someone is reading through this thread and getting a laugh, the sudden drama is jarring and is a downer. besides, this section of the forum is called "Nonsense" for a reason.

As Arch said, somebody's always offended by something. My standard for the jokes I post is "Would I tell this joke to my kids?" If so, then I post it.

And thank you, Krytae, for trying to get this thing back on track.

I now offer a joke that some people may find incredibly offensive only if they don't realize the joke is completely reversible and is, at the end of the day, a joke.


One morning in the wee hours, the Pope is awakened by his secretary. "Your Excellency! I bring you news! Important news!"
The Pope, a bit groggy and still waking up, asks what's up.
"Well," the secretary begins, "There is good news, and bad news."
Annoyed, the Pope motions for him to go on. "Tell me the good news first."
"Well, your excellency, the Lord Jesus has at last returned to the Earth!"
The Pope jumps up, excited. "That's wonderful! What news could possibly be bad on such a day as this?"
The secretary hesitates, and then answers...
