A dark tale exploring serious themes and featuring a compelling narrative with nighttime "shadow duels" to release in 2026 courtesy of monster taming experts Yanako RPGs
LAS VEGAS - September 3, 2025 - Independent game developer Yanako RPGs is pleased to present Yami Kids, a moody monster taming title planned for release in 2026. The premise behind the creation of Yami Kids is to take elements that made classic monster taming titles so great, update them for a modern audience, and wrap around it a riveting narrative with serious themes including tragedy, familial bonds, and revenge for a unique approach to the genre. Add in beautifully-drawn pixel art, a retro-flavored soundtrack, clever gameplay mechanics incorporating day and night cycles resulting in nighttime "Shadow Duels", and the inclusion of community feedback, and Yami Kids has a formula for success.
Yami Kids launches on Kickstarter today with a funding goal of just $7,000 USD and copies of the game starting at $15 USD ($10 for limited early bird backers). If funded, Yami Kids will release on PC in 2026 with additional platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch based on stretch goal progression. Stretch goals have already been planned to include additional localizations, content such as "Nuzlocke Mode," difficulty settings, and more. Backers can pledge at higher support levels to get their hands on beta access, the game's soundtrack and digital art book, and even contribute to the design of monsters, characters, and the script within the game. Yami Kids's Kickstarter campaign will run for 30 days:
"Shin Megami Tensei: Demi Kids and YU-GI-OH were major inspirations for Yami Kids," notes Yanako RPGs's Yano. "We're excited to make our first game with our custom in-house monster tamer game engine and are working hard to create a story and characters that all ages can enjoy. A lot of thought is going into our intertwined overworld and underworld, maximizing customization and replayability, and interlooping ideas in the story with characters weaving in and out of different realms and worlds with some fun time travel elements as well. We hope fans enjoy it!"
