Or rather, Reed Renson's, the finest gunslinger and bounty hunter to ever draw a gun on the prairie! Reed picks up the trail of Varius Valentine, a sinister vampire behind an undead plague sweeping the West. Hordes of zombies stand between him and the glorified leech, led by Valentine's lieutenants: Iron Heart, a ferocious armored knight of yore; Soul King, master of terrifying spirits; and Blazing Crown, an elemental mage controlling the power of fire. Each controls a red crystal that grants them special powers and renders them almost unstoppable.

Reed isn't about to go and punch zombies, no sir! He brings guns to the fight, his pistol, revolver, pump-action shotgun, and everyone's favorite, the Kalashnikov. However, his biggest asset is his ability to run: Every screen in Red Pistol comes with waves upon waves of zombies converging on Renson to rip him apart, add some extra holes, or otherwise put him in the ground. As Reed dispatches zombies, he gains experience exclusive to the run, leveling up and unlocking further upgrades from fragmentation rounds, through regeneration and life-stealing, to more exotic abilities like supernatural followers unleashing their abilities on the enemy.

Each of the major bosses makes a fragment of the Dark West their domain and each presents Reed with a different challenge, from the perilous Desolation Sands filled with rotting hordes, through the haunted Whispering Pines full of angry spirits, to the gothic Crimson Mansion where Varius waits for the gunslinger. The only moment of peace comes when returning to camp to spend hard-earned currency on permanent upgrades between runs, giving more health to survive the zombie bites, faster leveling up, or faster reloads; there's nothing quite as dangerous as realizing you emptied your entire magazine just as the horde comes down to take a bite.

Every run is unique thanks to a combination of random upgrades and procedurally generated maps. With all upgrades purchased, a run can last around twenty to twenty five minutes, providing a self-contained, adrenaline-filled adventure.

"Players feel the rush of intense combat and the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles," notes Marcos Nunes, lead designer and developer. "The sweet spot was chosen deliberately," he adds, “keeping players motivated to jump back in and explore new strategies."

Marcos is one half of Ace Horizon Studios, a Brazilian game development company, responsible for design and implementation of the chaotic Dark West shooter. The other half is Leticia Nunes, who brought the game concept to life with an art style combining retro-themed pixel art with clarity necessary to craft a gripping, adrenaline-fueled experience where no matter how many zombies chase Reed around, you always know where to point your guns.
