I've recently installed the latest Ubuntu release on my Samsung Ultrabook, and it flies! I love it.
Does anyone have any insights on whether Minecraft has issues running on this OS?
Ubuntu - good for minecraft?

I hadnt had any issues with it when I was running Ubuntu 12.04. It does fly too. I had to get rid of the Unity Desktop Environment though, it was causing lag for me.

Minecraft on Linux works fine. Just don't try to be clever on a Unix environment unless you know what you're doing.

Sorry. I'm sure you got answers from others already. ^^
Maybe one day I should try it too.
