Is a tithe of 10% of one's income still mandatory? I heard someone justify this with a snippet of the Book of Matthew:
Matthew 23:23 wrote: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone."
Although I have no question giving money towards the preaching of the Gospel is a great thing to do, is this 10% fashion still mandatory?

Also - suprise, suprise, I have been trying to keep the Sabbath Holy for about six months now. No, I am not a Seventh-Day Adventist. What drove me to do this?

Well, for starters, nobody ever told us to stop. The verses used to back up the statements about Jesus saying we didn't have to observe the Sabbath are usually vague in the context that they are used. It is also noted that Paul kept the Sabbath.

I found a website with some terrific arguements about whether we need to keep the Sabbath holy or whether we don't.

Please voice your opinions, for I am so terribly confused.

We go to church every Sunday (unless we're sick). We also tithe 10%. Why? Well in the Bible 10% was the suggested amount for farmers. Is it mandatory? No, but if you think about it..what is truly yours? Has God not provided all that you have..I think it tests your faith to give back and expand His earthly kingdom. There's been many times where we tithed until it hurts and left a few dollars in our checkbook. God still provided. There have also been times where we could not tithe due to bills but then in the 11th hour came up with the funds to do so and we did. (It was last year or so where we couldn't tithe and felt bad about it and we sold a car stereo we picked up on clearance and were not using and that covered the tithe)

From the LDS perspective, it is optional to tithe 10% and to keep the Sabbath holy. You're not going to lose your membership in the church if you don't do these things.

However, keep in mind that these are mandatory if you want to be a member who holds a temple recommend (basically the "pass" that allows members to participate in temple ordinances). Especially for the tithing issue, but if someone has to work on the Sabbath, then sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. (The Stake President here is a surgeon, so people are quite understanding when the person God selected to lead the flock is unable to make it to a meeting. Even if it is on a Sunday.)

So for Mormons, the answer is "yes and no."

Oh, I should have mentioned this earlier, but I'm keeping a Saturday Sabbath, not on Sunday. This is usually where some of the arguement arises.
