Hmm...what have videogames taught me about marriage.

Skyrim: people are totally okay with me proposing on the first date.

Fable: Polygamy, affairs, and adultery are all totally okay, as long as you're rich.

The Sims: If you don't like your current wife, just trap her in a box with wooden chairs and a fireplace.

I didn't know you could marry on Skyrim? Does marrying someone have any benefits on the game or is it just something to do?

In other online games, like EverQuest II, they can share player housing and take on the same surname. The characters, in short, are married because their players said so, not because the game did.
My wife and I did this. There's absolutely no game mechanic for it of any kind. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad one, but when it says "share housing" all that really means is you can give total access to your house to another character, so they can add or remove items or move stuff around. They still have the ability to own their own house.

In regards to marrying people in Skyrim...

1. You get access to a house to sleep in.
2. Depending on who you marry, they will give YOU gold.
3. You get a new follower (I think.)

I don't remember specifically what they had mentioned. The thing about the marriage system in Skyrim... there is no gender lock for marrying someone.
