***Spoilers only up to the beginning of Season 3.***
So I was thinking about the episode in which the Galactica returns to New Caprica to rescue the colonists from the Cylons.
Ever notice how, in the show, the characters often spoke of Pegasus as the superior Battlestar? It was called the "Beast" and Galactica was known as the "Bucket." Galactica was older, a bit smaller, and had only 2 hangar bays to Pegasus' 4. (The Pegasus had the same 2 hangar pontoons but if you look close, you'll see that each pontoon had 2 hangar bays in it, one inverted.)
I submit to you that Galactica was the superior Battlestar... at least in terms of durability.
The hull of Galactica was ribbed, a feature that seems to be unique. Other Battlestars didn't seem to have that feature. I suspect this was some kind of armor. Think about it...
By this point in the series, Galactica had sustained direct hits from at least one nuclear tipped Cylon missile earlier in the series. In orbit over New Caprica, Galactica was exposed to enemy fire for a sustained period from 4 Base Ships while the Colonial ships lifted off and jumped away. This was after she had jumped into the atmosphere of New Caprica and suffered massive stress and heat as she plummeted toward the ground before jumping back into orbit.
True, Galactica was about to be destroyed when Pegasus came to save the day, but what happened next?
Pegasus flew into the midst of the battle. We can presume two Base Ships probably shifted their attention to Pegasus while the other two probably concentrated on finishing off Galactica. Possibly a third joined them. That isn't made clear. What is made clear is that Pegasus sustained massive, unrecoverable damage during the brief period of time she was involved in the fight. Moments after Galactica jumped safely away, Pegasus' crew abandoned ship and the Battlestar was locked on a collision course with one of the Base Ships, which it rammed and destroyed, with one hangar pontoon shearing off and crippling, possibly destroying, another.
I submit to you that Admiral Adama chose to take Galactica, not Pegasus, back to New Caprica because he knew Pegasus couldn't take as much punishment as Galactica. Anyone who has seen the rest of the show knows Galactica is capable of taking much, much more damage than she did over New Caprica and still come out intact.
Seems Pegasus, for all her advanced tech and size, has a glass jaw.

It's...a TV show. I'm pretty sure they did that for the sake of the plot.
