Thank you Sourena Game Studio for sending us this game to review!
Legends of Persia was successfully kickstarted in May of 2014 and Greenlit on Steam a month before that. While the meager $3,000 funding goal was geared towards localizing the game for other languages, it could have used more time and resources towards beta testing.
This chapter of Legends of Persia is about an ambitious king’s son who is given a chance to live despite being told he is not going to have an easy life. The story behind the game is depicted with wonderfully animated art and dialogue; however they are not always in sync with each other. Some voice dialogue is missing altogether!
While the dungeon crawler gameplay is similar to Diablo, it’s definitely lacking Blizzard’s polish. The graphics are mediocre and the first area felt sparse and empty with the exception of palm trees, barrels and wagons to smash and undead monsters to kill. Towns only have a few people in them and the houses all look the same. Picking up gold and loot was a bit of a chore since I had to walk over them several times to successfully grab them.
Strong Points: Nice background music; beasts for hire to help fight monsters
Weak Points: Unstable and corrupts save files; unimpressive graphics; unskippable movies; cut-scenes and audio out of sync
Moral Warnings: Although blood can be disabled, there are still gibs and unattached body parts
Like many RPG games, the female characters are barely covered in armor and to make matters worse the story sequences are geared for the male characters instead. Character skills and attributes are customizable with points awarded for leveling up. There are many passive and active skills to choose from. Like many 3D dungeon crawler games there’s plenty of good weapons and armor dropped and something better is always around the corner.
If you’re looking for multiplayer matches or a lengthy single-player game, you’ll have to look elsewhere. The game’s description boasts of five to eight hours of game play. I lost a lot of time playing this game due to crashes to my desktop and having my save file get corrupted from a glitch in the game. Legends of Persia autosaves so there’s no recourse if you inexplicably crash to the desktop. Despite all of my trouble, I still beat this game in less than five hours.
While I was looking for a save file to restore from, I stumbled upon the game’s folder in My Documents and there’s a settings file that has the screen resolution there. You cannot adjust the screen’s resolution in the game. I do like how they offer an option to disable blood though. Even with the blood disabled, the zombies break into various pieces upon their defeat.

The quests and bosses offer some variety to the repetitive clicking and killing. There is a “protect the NPC” quest and for the most part, the A.I. was smart enough to keep a safe distance from the monsters. There were always a few monsters that attacked him instead of me, but thankfully the NPC’s health regenerated. If you summon or purchase a beast to fight alongside you, sadly, their damage is permanent.
While not as vast as many popular MMOs out there, the skill tree is decent and offers many passive and active skills to assign and level up for your character. With each level they can add or upgrade skills and increase their stats for strength, agility, defense, and intelligence. Characters can equip two weapons and switch between them using the tab key. I preferred melee for close encounters and archery for my ranged attack.
The controls use a combination of keyboard shortcuts and mouse buttons to attack and use items or skills. Picking up loot was challenging at times as it took me several “walkovers” to collect them. I also had some difficulty mapping my skills to the keyboard shortcut I wanted and one pair of boots refused to be worn for some reason.
The developer has been great about responding to my e-mails and will be patching and adding more to Legends of Persia. For the backers out there and others who paid good money for this game, I hope it becomes more stable and fun to play. As for everyone else, I’d wait for this game to get better or cheaper.
