Angerfoot-studio release Steam demo for viral medical roulette game Side Effects

Indie hit studio Free Lives (Terra Nil, Broforce, Gorn, Stick it to the Stickman) has released a demo for Side Effects on Steam today! A turn-based medical roulette game where every dose could be your last.

Two test subjects. One twisted medical trial. Only one leaves. Each round you'll be presented with a selection of pills. Some are helpful, some are harmful, and some mean instant death. Outlast your opponent in order to win.

An early prototype of Side Effects went viral on itch.io and YouTube, drawing millions of views and hundreds of thousands of plays. The Steam version of the demo will also be part of Steam Next Fest and comes with updated visuals, plenty of new items and mechanics and is a lot closer to the full version of the game, coming later this year.

Welcome to Side Effects: a tense, turn-based medical roulette game. Each round you'll be presented with a selection of pills. Some are helpful, some are harmful, and some mean instant death. You never know what you're about to consume or what it might do to your mind or body. Winning means outlasting – AKA, outliving – your opponent across the table.

Resist

Every pill impacts your resistance. Manage it wisely: zero resistance means death.

Experiment

Between rounds, you can choose from a range of experimental items and treatments that can shift the odds in your favor, from vaccines to mouth clamps.

You’re not alone

The other patient wants to outlast you. They’ll bluff, adapt, and use everything at their disposal to keep breathing one dose longer than you.

About developer and publisher Freelives

Free Lives are a team of teenage anthropomorphic turtles, led by their anthropomorphic beard wielding rat sensei in honing and perfecting their art of game jam jitsu to battle bills, pants, petty criminals, evil overlords and alien invaders. They met in the storm sewers of Cape Town, where they bonded over a love for dank accommodations, consuming copious amounts of pizza and remaining isolated from society-at-large.
