PS5 is selling 28,508 units daily in 2025, Xbox can’t keep up

According to new data from Finbold, Sony’s PlayStation 5 is the top-selling console of 2025 so far, averaging 28,508 units sold daily between January 1 and April 25.

With an estimated 3.25 million units shipped in that period, the PS5 has maintained a commanding lead over its competitors.

By contrast, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S sold just 730,000 units, averaging 6,403 units per day, nearly 400% fewer than the PS5.

The Nintendo Switch, despite not being part of the ninth generation and coming out three years earlier than Sony and Microsoft’s offerings, came in second in terms of sales. Specifically, the Switch sold an estimated 1.63 million for a daily average of 14,298.
Did Nintendo win the ninth-generation console war?

The situation in the first 116 days of 2025 has been something of a defeat for Microsoft.

The current generation Xbox has been noted as a disappointing product since its 2020 launch, due to its low sales numbers and a general lack of games, which many believe are driven by numerous technical issues that have deterred developers.

Nintendo, on the other hand, has much to celebrate. As Andreja Stojanovic, a co-author of the research, noted:

“Despite taking second place in terms of overall deliveries at 1.63 million - and, thus, in daily average sales, which Finbold estimated at 14,298 - it is nonetheless a resounding success. The Switch is an older console, having been released in 2017, which makes its continued popularity, especially over the newer ninth-generation Xbox, noteworthy. Its sales are particularly impressive, given that it is at the end of its life cycle with Nintendo scheduling the release of the successor console - Nintendo Switch 2 - for the second quarter (Q2) of 2025.”

PS5 and Xbox X|S fall 1 million short of their quarterly averages

The data also reveals a downward trend for both Sony and Microsoft. The PS5 shipped nearly 1 million fewer units than its quarterly average of 4.1 million, while the Xbox Series X|S missed its 1.8 million average by over 1 million units.

The figures suggest that, despite being under five years old, both consoles may be entering the late stages of their life cycle
