Xbox Live being annoying.

So here is my predicament,
For Christmas i got 3 months of Xbox Live Gold, I was able to put in the code online and get all that stuff done. When i next used my Xbox it said i needed to do an update in order to use Xbox Live, so I pressed yes and it started the downloading/update process.
Well, it never completed, it just froze about 1/5 of the way across the bar and never moved for about an hour, finally it said i needed to test my connection because something wasn't right, Well, I tested the connection and everything was fine, until it started testing the Xbox Live connection, when it came to that part it said i had to unplug the modem/router for thirty seconds and then plug it back in, and wait thirty seconds, so i did. I tried updating it again, it did the exact same thing.
I looked up Xbox.com and it said some suggestions which i tried, i tried unplugging everything and doing it again, i tried deleting some unused game saves and such to make room, i tried clearing the storage cache, nonetheless, it still did not update.
I really do not want to go through the process of calling the Xbox people to see if they can help me, but If I have to I will.
Before i do that, does anyone have any ideas how I might be able to fix this?
Thank you.
