Who is going to see this? I'm jealous that my hubby got invited to go with my neighbors...I want to see it too and my girlfriends are not into sci-fi. :\

Go solo and nerd it up.
I was actually very tempted to try and go to theaters for this one, since I wasn't around for any of the original Star Trek movies. I'm not, though my parents might.

I think I might be going with some friends this coming Tuesday, depends on how much homework I have to do. However, I can't really say I'm monumentally excited - tbh, at this point I'm mostly going to see how Benedict Cumberbatch plays the villain.

Just saw the movie today. Thought it was great. I'm also a huge Trekkie, so there might be some bias in my opinion.

Am I the only one who was disappointed when they didn't include Shatner's rendition of "Rocket Man" in the end credits?

Saw it last Friday. Prettymuch rocked my face off. Lots of references for the die hard fans.

I may watch the movie, but at home. So I'll wait til it gets to theaters.

Yeah, it was pretty great. Several dubious moments in physics (albeit, what star trek episode is complete without it?), a several cheap scenes, but ultimately a really fun movie.

I saw it, I only thought it was okay. That is all.

Agreed.
Not to get on a tangent, but this reminded me of something that's been confusing to me. A lot of people praise Star Trek in general as being intellectual and appeals to intelligent people on that basis... and yet you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out the dubious physics being common to Star Trek generally. I like Star Trek when the story has a statement to make, or provides new insights (Any episode written by Harlan Ellison is a good example.) Seems like a contradiction when we can watch a Trek show or movie and get distracted by the junk science.

Star Trek is at its best when it talks about some important issue related to science or, often, ethics. It's at its genre worst when it discards internal consistency in favor of bigger explosions. Beyond that the pseudo-science is all window dressing.
That said, I haven't watched the new movies. Never was a big movie/TV watcher.

What's neat about this new movie, is that it delves into the philosophy, more so than the first movie did. So it felt much more like Star Trek to me, this time around.
