HalcyonLioness: Youtube and Streaming Channels

Posted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 2:20 am
by HalcyonLioness
As of this date, I am very nervous about posting here, partly because I don't know what kind of reception I'll get for the subject of this thread... If this is the wrong place to put up a discussion/promotion thread for a livestream channel, let me and an admin know so we can get this corrected. Thank you!

With that out of the way... The deal is that I have a livestream channel on Twitch.tv.
(( twitch.tv/halcyonlioness )) [As of Feb 11th, 2013, I also have a YouTube Channel.] I do have a couple regular shows I'm running on the stream (one of which is Minecraft focused,) and I'm admittedly (and a little embarrassed to say so) a little low on viewers. So, following the advice of several internet mediamakers, I'm reaching out to the few communities I know for a little support in both the channel while I'm live and in spreading the word.

That said, my regular livestreams start on Monday and Wednesday at around 6 or 7 PM Pacific Standard Time. I love Role-playing my characters, acting out the reactions of the character I've been entrusted with, or giving funny voices to the text I might be happening to read. So if you like relaxed, creative, silly, serious, (mostly) family friendly, or just plain random fun, (or even bad acting and annoyingly funny voices in general) I'm your lioness.

And just to add (hopefully I can edit this out later one day,) I am relatively new to the streaming scene, so I may not have the polish a 'professional' livestreamer or YouTuber might have. I'm only doing this as a hobby, and I hope to improve... but I can only improve effectively with more eyes on the channel and voices sending feedback. Be gentle, be respectful, and I'll gladly consider any ideas that you happy lot may throw my way.

Now, what I'll be playing on the stream generally depends on the day -- (Spoilers are the old schedules and formats)
Spoiler:
Mondays-- are generally purely Minecraft-focused days; I might be touring a server, playing some minigames, or even playing an adventure map. It depends on what I've prepared for that week and what feedback I may get from other folks. These streams are usually 2 to 3 hours long depending on what kind of content I'll be using or showcasing, so if you want something short and sweet, a Monday stream might be right up your alley.
-- Wednesdays are my Warcraft/random game days; In WoW right now, I'm just focusing on leveling up my little Panda Monk girl up to level 85, then I'll likely either RP her adventures through the newer content past 85... or level up another character and maybe RP through his reactions *le shrug*. If Warcraft isn't your cup of tea (or if that cup got cold long ago for you) feel free not to show up for this show. I tend to drag the Wednesday streams out a while because of the nature of the content, so I won't blame you guys if you drop in and out randomly. (Not to mention that WoW draws a lot of negative/strong opinions, and I don't like promoting a stressed environment on my channel.) That said, I do like having company around when I level, and while I don't talk all that much on a Wednesday stream, I might treat these days as more podcast-y than Mondays. Where I'll go with that will depend largely on you happy lot. :3
-- On random days that are not Monday or Wednesday, I might be doing something different, like playing Pokemon (I have an RP Nuzlocke challenge that's been on Hiatus for a while, come to think of it) or a random flash game. These streams will likely also be fairly short depending on the showcased content (unless it's Pokemon. Leveling. Oh heavens, the tedium.)
-Mondays-
Stream: Mondays are still Minecraft Mondays. The format is going to be a whole lot more relaxed, and likely still going to be short and sweet as far as streams go. I've chucked out the "RP an Adventure Map over stream" idea (it was a royal flop, admittedly; everything that could go wrong went wrong...,) and I've decided that the next time I play through a map over livestream, it'll be played as it's supposed to be played. As for the content, I do have a personal modpack of my own that I've put together, and I'd love to share my adventures in that world with you guys. If time allows, I'll do some mod reviews in-stream, play a few minigames, and maybe even hang out with your happy lot on a server somewhere.

The stream proper will not be more than 2 to 3 hours, and unless life decides to get especially rough, I'll start the stream at around 6 or 7ish PST.

YouTube: After the stream proper, I'll unlist the streaming channel for recording footage for the stuff I'm sharing over YouTube (because Xsplit is having a hissy fit with private channel keys for some reason.) Since I don't exactly have hard-drive space to spare for the prolonged recordings YouTube demands, I'm pretty much stuck with using Twitch as a place to store my raw footage. I'll be recording more heavy and serious stuff here, including RP episodes and so on.

You're all welcome to stick around for any bloopers and hanging out with me in-between takes; just be mindful that if I'm playing in-character, you'll need to wait until I'm at a break in the story or in-between takes before I can answer questions and consider suggestions.

-Tuesdays-
YouTube: Tuesdays are strictly not a streaming day, so the streaming channel will remain unlisted should I run out of time recording on Monday night. The recording sessions will be varied depending on the difficulty of the content and so on.

-Wednesdays-
Stream: Wednesdays are going to be a bit more varied and relaxed. As I've said before, I'm really trying to downplay the fact I do happen to enjoy playing the game-that-should-not-be-named, so my Wednesday streams are going to feature a bit less WoW and more random stuff. I might pull out Portal or Magicka or some random flash game to share with you guys after the WoW portion of the stream. I'll start at the usual time and just hang out with you guys for however long I might have in my system. Cheers.

YouTube: I do have another project I've been wanting to do on my mind, but we'll see how this format goes before I dive into that alongside what I'm currently sharing over YouTube. What that idea is exactly will have to wait for another Thursday Thoughts.

-Thursdays-
Cumulative: This will be my wrapping up day for the week. Expect blog posts on Thursdays and maybe radio silence while I take care of business behind the scenes.

-Weekends-
If I haven't posted anything on Youtube on Thursday, I'm likely going to post on Friday and leave things up to the Lord after that. Anything bewteen Friday postings and Monday is going to be set aside as sabbath and rest, planning and prepping for next week.

I generally would announce on my twitter what my next stream or video upload will be, so if you want updates on my next stream or video, it'd be a good idea to head there: (( twitter.com/HalcyonLioness ))

I'll do what I can to update this thread with what I might be doing for my next stream, and I do encourage discussion on what we can share next in this thread.

That said, thanks for your time if you've read all this. Have fun, be safe, and be awesome. I'll see you happy lot the next time I'm live.

Thursday Thoughts, Edition 001, Febrary 7th, 2013
(Forum Update Edition)

Welcome to Thursday Thoughts. The purpose of this little bit is to be something of a blog of sorts; a way to futher expand on little updates and ideas that I normally would not be able to do either speaking on stream or in the serious shorthand of twitter.

Feel free to weigh in on the topics mentioned in these articles; as an entertainer, it'll provide some insight into just what it is I'm actually signing up for.

First on the list is something I may have chatted about over this last Wednesday’s 'Hangout' stream: basically, I'm considering taking a little break from mediamaking and perhaps media in general for about a week or so. Not sure if I'll go on a full-out media fast for Lent (though, that will be seriously considered in prayer) but given how toxic the mainstream media is (and this is counting platforms such as Twitch and Youtube), a few days in detox will be good and healthy. Just wanted to give you guys a heads up before I drop off the face of the earth.

Second, and I may have also chatted about this over my regular Wednesday stream, but I've long considered branching out into YouTube seriously, and I've spent the last couple days reviewing what other mediamakers caution and advise noob 'Tubers like myself and acquainting myself with a few tools of the trade available (to those with almost no budget ... *facepalm*) ... I'm not going to lie, it is a pain in the butt (particularly editing the footage,) and I'm getting serious knots in the gut and grasshoppers in the heart just thinking about the notion posting content there. What might be your thoughts about this, you happy lot? Should I risk this path? Or should I wait? Regardless of whether or not I remain a dedicated livestreamer, it'll be good to have others along for the ride in whatever I happen to do.

Third, and this will affect my streams (and perhaps my Youtube identity in the future, should I explore that road,) I’m currently chipping out the full nature of my content and what that content would be identified by. I’ve pretty much settled on being family friendly (mostly), so that part is non-negotiable. I’m keen on presenting myself as a character (likely just my Minecraft Avatar instead of my actual face), or simply keeping my entertainment persona separate from my IRL persona... Though I don’t think that latter option will work very well considering I’m also very keen on role-playing/acting the parts of different characters in the games and series that I’ll be involved in. I’d also like to see you guys weigh in on this matter. I have an idea on what I might do, but the mirror of other voices does help in making crucial decisions like this.

For my forum readers out there, I’ve just now opened a blog for these things so you happy lot won’t get assailed by these massive walls of text every week. For now, the link is here at Thursday Thoughts.

Anyways, that’s the gist of what’s on my mind this week in regards to the streaming channel and what I have planned for the future. I greatly appreciate any feedback I can get at this nascent stage I’m currently at.

Until I’m live again -- Have fun, be safe, and be awesome.

Starting out, welcome to boards! I'm glad to see you are actively involved in the creative process.

Youtube might be a better medium, as it's accessible any time instead having to wait till you are streaming. You can also crop and edit the videos down to make it more accessible for the passing viewer.

So, because I can't see any of your videos right now, what is it that you provide the viewer? It sounds like you're streaming video of you playing Minecraft and WoW? Why should someone watch you instead of playing it themselves? You mentioned RPing, are your videos episodes of stories?

I don't know if this link will work, but this should take you to some of my previous broadcasts. ((Click Me!))

In regards to what I provide and why people should watch my channel(s):
To be frank, I really started streaming as sort of a satellite channel for another livestreamer. Our original intent was that I would play parallel to his series, particularly in Pokemon games or in Minecraft, so that viewers would have a secondary perspective available to them. With my partner still dealing with college full-time and having less resources to stream reliably, I'm kind of left with nearly no identity of my own. ... that's partly why I'm looking for advice and possible directions to go towards, because I'll be pretty wishy-washy otherwise.

In regards to RP:
I love telling stories, or at least giving voice to words. When I RP, I do treat each RP-stream as a single episode or a chapter in that story. Frankly, though, solo-RP doesn't translate very well over stream (as I unfortunately discovered during my experimental run this past Monday.) It might work if I had a friend or two playing with me, but solo is no-go.

In regards to why one should watch my content rather than playing themselves:
I actually advocate going out and playing on your own time. I really don't mind if you'd rather play the game yourself; it's good to actually try something out rather than let someone else's opinion color your experience and I'd rather not compete with actually having the game in the player's hands.
That said, there are some folks who might not have the hours in the day they used to dedicate to games with the breadth of content available to players ... like say Minecraft, Pokemon, or WoW (I won't limit myself to these games/series mind you. Just starting out and all.) I happen to have the time, so I'll play for these folks, whether they can't shell out $15 a month (can't blame folks for that; times are tight these days,) are just curious about what's changed (or what's stayed the same,) or simply can't be bothered to manually jam mods into their minecraft.jar/folders. Granted, every joe and their mother already does this and I'm not too keen on conjuring up some gimmick to stand out.

And yet another wall of text. Sorry about that.

Anyways, I hope this post lit things up for you :3 ... As always, I do appreciate respectful feedback. Thanks for accommodating me.

I'm just testing the waters over on Youtube.
CLICK ME... BIf you can't see the embedded video below.

((Thanks to Deepfreeze32 for the embedding tutorial. So THAT's how it works!))

These videos are unlisted for the moment. If you guys approve, I'll list them and see where this takes us.

------

Anyways, I've been spending a lot of time in meditation and prayer since Thursday. I'm honestly still feeling crickets and butterflies about this whole putting content up onto Youtube business... but at the same time, I'm getting a sense of 'it's okay' doing this.

Should I get a passing grade from you guys, I'll definitely change my Livestreaming format to accommodate my YouTube channel. I'll further discuss that format with you happy lot on my next Thursday Thoughts.

So, until next time, folks: Have fun, be safe, and be awesome.

It's totally allowed, so long as it's clean. Here's a handy tutorial I wrote on how to do it!

I've been looking into streaming games myself, though for now I'll try to record myself playing various games and providing commentary on them. I'll check out your stuff at some point.

I skimmed through your videos yesterday and you are a very entertaining person!

The only small problem is that your microphone level is pretty low. Maybe try fixing that in future videos?

I really like the RP stuff. Very entertaining. I was interested in trying RP myself, but I usually end up failing miserably. So, great job!
