Which to Read First: The Great Gatsby or The Hobbit?

I have nothing to read, but haven't read either of these, so I figured I'd take some opinions.
I've heard good things about both of these books. On one hand, The Hobbit has something of a community right now, and The Lord of the Rings is a series following it. However, The Great Gatsby also sounds interesting, if not a bit deep for me. I can take a good sociopolitical critique here and there, but I don't have the intellectual depth that may be required to appreciate this book.
Your call?

Why don't you read both of them at once? They're very different and I feel like it wouldn't be that difficult to switch back and forth.
They're also both decently short, so I'm not sure how much it matters. However, having read both, I'd definitely say that they're worth your time.

Okay. So at this time, I believe I will start with The Hobbit unless one of the forum's dashing intellectuals come parading in with an outstanding reason as to why I should read The Great Gatsby.
And no... I would get very confused switching between the two. I will find one far more interesting than the other, likely, and prune off the other book so I won't bother to finish it.

I haven't read the other, though yes, the Hobbit is a great book.

The Hobbit. Does the Great Gatsby have a dragon? I didn't think so.

Gatsby was/is an excellent commentary on the "gotta have it now" culture of the 20's, much like today IMO. It's a pretty good read...
But it's not The Hobbit.

We just finished reading the book and with the movie out it was perfect timing. Read the Hobbit and then go see the movie!

Why was this even a question?

Because I know few-to-none on both of these books, and this website has a decent intellectual community (ArchAngel, ArcticFox, and you among others).

Only thing is you have to smoke a pipe while reading The Hobbit

That sounds pretty amazing, sitting outside with a pipe hanging off your mouth, packed with longbottom, the finest pipe-weed in the southfarthing.

On a porch of an old farmhouse, in an old wooden rocking chair perhaps.
