I am trying to find a game from the past. It was a Doom or Doom II clone, but had role playing elements. Your character leveled up, and got stronger. Spells were learned etc. I think it was a D&D game, but I am not sure.

But none of those games were it. I played it somewhere between 1992 and 1995.

You had one character per save - no teams. It was fluid in movement, so not one movement at a time or turn based. It was first person. There were multiple classes and races. I remember human, elf, half elf, etc. I remember the paladin was one of the best characters especially at later levels.

Dungeons randomly generated and there were only dungeons. No towns, no outside. The closest I can find is the Ravenloft games from that time frame, but they have aspects that do not match.

It was a DOS game. In essence a first person shooter that was also a role playing game.

Players could attack with weapons and spells.

Anvil of Dawn looks close, but it was released a year later. There was character creation so games like Stonekeep were not it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you're looking for a first-person perspective roguelike.

While nothing comes to mind, that might help you narrow your search query a bit.

Was it a multiplayer game, or exclusively singleplayer?

Out of the back of my head... Sounds like you're looking for something from the early Action-RPG genre.

If it was based on the Doom angine and not just a clone, I would take a look at Heretic, Hexen or Strife. I don't remember if they had a character creation though.

If it wasn't traditional fantasy setting but instead e.g. cyberpunk, Shadowrun (the old one, not 2000+ version) might be worth your time.

I played Hexen and I don't think the levels were randomly generated.

It sounds like Amulets and Armor. But that was released in 97. You were in a tavern if you weren't on a quest, though I'm not at all certain dungeons were randomly generated.

Try searching Abandonia. The legality is questionable, so I can't recommend downloading anything not marked freeware. But it does supply names and screens of what the game looks like.

I think it was single player only. I wonder about Dungeon Hack, but it does not feel quite right.

It was not Heretic of Hexen. I checked those first. Not Strife just checked it out. I really think it had a D&D connection - somehow. The classes I remember are all in the Ravenloft games, and one of them is in the time era. But I thought it was only underground, and only one character - not two.

Definitely no Amulets and Armor. Thank you for Abandonia, that gave me some more leads to track down.



Ravenloft is the closest I can find, and maybe that was it. Ultima Underworld is also close. Maybe we had a demo or something.

I am asking some of my old Air Force buddies to see if any of them remember. I appreciate all the ideas ya'll are coming up with.

Dungeon Hack was my first suggestion for you, but if it was something else, I'll keep looking.

Anyway, no problem. Game history is one of my favorite things to study, so helping someone out while learning more is just a win-win.

I thought it had a full screen view of the action, and then a menu screen with the characters equipment. But it was so long ago I may not be remembering it right.

Dungeon Hack feels familiar. Maybe that was it.

I remember that game, and if you want a new variation to it, try Legends of Grimrock, I think that's the title. It offers the same style of gameplay.

Daggerfall was my first thought, too. Arena could be a good guess as well, but it didn't have randomly-generated dungeons.

Arena Character creation, yes. First-person perspective, yes. Real-time action, yes. Randomized dungeons, no.

Daggerfall Character creation, yes. First-person perspective, yes. Real-time action yes. Randomized dungeons, yes (and actually one of the sticking points of the game because it tended to cause glitches, some of which made the game unwinnable!)

However, both those games had towns and outdoor areas. So it may not be what you were thinking of after all. But both of those are free (Bethesda decided to give them away to celebrate the anniversary of the Elder Scrolls games) and certainly worth a play.
