i is the equivalent of the square root of -1. floatingnose's answer was incorrect, but it is still obvious that he knows something
The correct answer to the square root of -9, is just (positive)3i.

Nope. positive or negative 3i. A square root of a number is a number that, when multiplied by itself, will produce said number. 3i is a square root of -9 because it produces 9*-1, which equals -9. However, -3i is also a square root.
-3i = -1 * 3 * i
(-1 * 3 * i) * (-1 * 3 * i) = (1 * 9 * -1) = 9 * -1 = -9
Therefore, the square root of -9 is equal to plus or minus 3i
FloatingNose's answer was correct. Micah's answer was incorrect. Oregorn was only partially correct.

So I don't think that is my grade level but I learned something.
SOLVE!!!
(6y + 12)2
(that two is supposed to be a Exponent/power)

Can't solve for the variable unless I have both sides of the equation.
But, factoring out:
(6y + 12) squared =
36y^2 + 144y + 144

btw, helpful fact for you Micah: "^" means "to the power of"
So, 5^8 means 5 to the 8th power.
Makes things a lot easier
