Defender is a good choice.
What would you choose for your primary leader?
Is this thing on...

Typically mage. Nosferatu if I'm playing Horde due to the healing and still being AoE.
I've toyed with scout leaders but too often I find that I really needed to be able to take out all 3 back row mage/scout/healer/etc in just 2 shots instead of taking three. Barring city combat I usually have enough initiative manipulation to not worry about opposing scouts. That doesn't fly so well against a human, but... eh.

I'm ambivalent. I didn't get the opportunity to play many SEGA games as a kid and to some extent succumbed to Nintendo snobbery. I'm sure they're alright but I'm mostly past getting excited about particular companies or development houses. They all have gems and flops (well, they all have flops, the good ones have gems too). Sonic just doesn't entertain me though <duck and cover>

Oh, I agree. I could never see the appeal of Sonic when I was younger. Now that I'm older and played the first two Genesis games... I still can't really see how anyone could prefer Sonic over Mario.
I never owned a Sega console, but I have played a good amount of Sega games from the Genesis Collection that came out on the PS3. They're alright.

Sonic 2 is more than Mario could ever be.

Waiting for Sonic RPG
Then I might be bothered to look at the world's least photogenic hedgehog.
