And I think it's that kind of attitude that helps fuel these types of claims. Whether it's aliens or ghosts or whatever. There's something about them that makes some of us say "sure, it hasn't happened before... but maybe this time it'll pan out. Possibly, this time, it will be the one that makes all the difference."
But we won't know for certain until we actually test it. Do the research. Take a look at the claims (or read up on how others have interpreted the claim and found their own evidence) and then determine for ourselves.
Like the NASA scientist I presented above, most of the time nothing will come from it. But just like looking at all the planets in the universe - there's always the chance you'll miss that one exception that will prove that they exist. But if you don't look for it at all - if you draw the conclusion that such-and-so is impossible - you'll definitely miss it.
