Rums fine with me, but nothing I pursue so much. I'm more inclined towards the scotches and bourbons.

I fixed the sourness I mentioned with a bit of backsweetening and maybe a half dozen cinnamon sticks. By this morning it was about perfect. Dangerous perfect, I brought the gallon out fishing and passed it around, we were all kinds of screwed up. You really oughta try a batch sometime.

Hmm, favorite Scotch.
At the moment, I'd probably have to say Glenlivet (I have a 12 year). It's really what I looked for in a scotch. Goes great with a cigar or pipe.
Black Label and Glenmorangie were pretty decent. My friend introduced me to this japanese scotch (yeah, it's a thing), which was not half bad at all. Can never remember it's name.
I have a bottle of Glenfiddich in my liquor cabinet I'm going to have to try, and I'm trying to triple check to see if the Costco 18 year single malt is actually Macallans before I pick it up. This might change.

My long term goal is to have a special on reserve stash of a highly favored scotch that is old enough to order it's own scotch. Special occasions and such.

Man, I've only ever had scotch once (a shame, yes) and it was Glenlivet 12-year. It was phenomenal. Although, I think I've already talked to you about that in an earlier conversation this year XD it went with brats from a local deli (none of that Johnsonville nonsense) and ear after ear of freshly picked corn on the cob. I think I ate 3 brats and 2 ears of corn while sitting barefoot next to the fire upon which we had cooked the brats. Scotch came beforehand--the meal itself was accompanied by a bourbon that I greatly regret forgetting the name of.

I miss summer.


ANYWAY.


Since we're on the topic--let's say you're at a given bar you've never before been, and have no menu. What do you 1) order for yourself and 2) order for thine lady? It can be either with a meal or without. Your choice :P

Hmm, good question.

If we were hungry (and it was a bar and grill), maybe a burger for myself(if you can't grill a proper burger, what can you say about yourself as a grill, really?) and a fish and chips for the missus. If that place is known for something, I'd gravitate to that.
Which reminds me, there's this bar on Pismo beach (beautiful beach with nice town, about midway between LA and SF) that had the most phenomenal fish and chips, great selection of beers on top and a bartender who knew what we wanted more than we did. It was cool, we both were a bit newer to the whole drink and beer scene, and I ordered a Fat Tire because it was recommended to me. He stopped me, and told "Wait, I think I have something you'd like better," and poured me a 24 ozer of Prohibition Pale Ale and while it's no longer my favorite, it became my favorite at the time and one of the few pale ales I'd actively grab. My wife ordered a Smirnoff Ice, he stopped her likewise and poured her Woodchuck Apple Cider, which is one of her favorite drinks to this day.
That man is a legend. We totally have to go back.

Anyhow, I digress. With a meal, I'd ask what sort of IPAs and Double IPAs they have. I'd give priority to Doubles and those I haven't tried yet, then IPAs.

If I wasn't hungry, I'd probably ask for a straight double of a scotch or bourbon, preferably something I know of but haven't tried yet. If not, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are great choices, always. And if I had happened to have my pipe, I'd find a place to smoke it up and relax with good conversation or a good book.

Oh man. Woodchuck is the best. There's a small pub lodged in a nook between a couple buildings in a town near mine that keeps the stuff ON TAP. Like, next to the beers. Growing up on a property with >10 apple trees gave me a love for cider of all kinds :3

Anyway, speaking of pipes, I recall a variety of pipe tobacco local to MI (at least, I think so--I only know of a couple places in central and western MI that sell it, but my experience is limited and I might be off on this) called "Blue Moon." It's lovely. Some people compare it to "smoking a candy bar," but I would disagree as it isn't THAT sweet. However, a friend of mine described it more accurately: "smoking a stack of pancakes." Just sweet enough and very satisfying. Now I've got 3 varieties sitting around the house: black cavendish, whiskey cavendish, and a sweet mix called creme brulee. The first two are actually a Christmas/birthday present from my girlfriend to my dad (she's a keeper), and I picked up the last one for myself :P Haven't had the chance to try any out, though. I'm gonna have to make a run for Blue Moon, though.

While we're on the topic: preference for pipes? My dad's probably got at least 15-20, most of them just for collection purposes. He's got a pretty valuable Meerschaum for special occasions, a couple notable Irish pipes, and a couple he inherited from his dad that he keeps in a case because he only knows they're pretty nice and pretty pricey and is too protective of them to use them often :P

Wow, sounds like I have to defer to you for pipe advice!

Right now, I just have a standard small pipe. It does the job and it feels pretty nice.
As for tobacco, the first one I tried was Captain Black at my cousins and I liked it. Nothing too strong in flavor, but it sat well. I ended up picking this cheap one called Red River because I wanted to bring my pipe to the beach and it was the only one at the local smoke shop. It was horrible, I'll be throwing away the whole bag. No flavor and smells like cigarette tobacco.
Stopped by a proper pipe shop a little bit ago and picked up Black Vanilla (recommended by a friend) and #600, so I'll see how I'll like them. The smell is great, so I'm looking forward to trying it out. I don't smoke much at all and so who knows when the next time is.
