So this is a long and perhaps emotional one.

Two things contributed to this resurgence in guitar playing.

So when I found out my dad had cancer, and I saw him in person (I live far away, so I visit for Christmas/Thanksgiving) I saw how weak he had become. He wasn't wasting away, but he was reduced to sitting in an easy chair watching TV all day. As cliche as it sounds, seeing him sitting there frailly was a scary thing.

The other thing is that my love of music has never died, but my interest in playing had diminished due to moving, constantly packing and unpacking the guitars, and eventually selling them because I had to move across the country. That I was also not really improving my skills contributed to my diminished playing of the instrument. I had never really been able to "get" music theory, nor was I able to do some of the techniques that really interested me (Sweep picking, soloing in general).

When I was visiting home, a perfect storm occurred where I realized that I still liked music, and saw how cancer was tearing apart my dad's life, and I looked at what I had been doing with my free time (Playing video games and, that's all folks). I decided that if I was going to spend all of my after-work time at home, I would dedicate at least an hour of that time each day to something "fulfilling" (self-defined). I had considered trying writing, but while I enjoy writing and want to do it more, it was always kind of frustrating. My brother had a guitar he never uses, and a friend I stayed with for a bit had an acoustic lying around, so I started plucking the strings again, trying to remember the chords I'd learned, and I realized that I had picked up the guitar back in the day for a reason: Playing it was fun. So I decided when I got back home, I'd get another guitar and try again. I decided I would use Rocksmith as the refresher course (Since I already knew most of what I was doing, I just needed some guidance), and it's worked well. Some of the detection is a little bit off (it doesn't help that I have some serious fret buzz that I can't figure out the cause of...), but overall the game is useful for practicing bits of a song over and over again, and nailing some techniques.

So I've set a goal for myself: I will learn music theory, somehow. I will try to get as good at guitar as I can, because it's fun and it doesn't feel quite as much like I'm wasting time as just playing video games (Will still play video games, because wasting time is also a blast and I'm not going to deny that I do enjoy them). I have this vague goal in mind of maybe recording music at some point, but that's faaaar away from my current skill level. Or at least how comfortable I am right now. My hypothetical goal is to be good enough to join a band, but I do not know any local musicians or what have you, so that's more of a "would be nice" thing.


Sorry if that was sappy and cliche, it's kind of strange how powerful the fear/recognition of death and debilitating illness is.

More or less. I have to admit the show doesn't hold a ton of interest to me as I am no longer a child, but I also cannot deny that Fred Rogers was an incredibly positive influence in my life, and in the lives of other children. Even though I don't know if I would watch it myself, I would let any hypothetical children of mine watch it.

I understand that. And I think it's great you chose to pick up a guitar again. I also don't think it's sappy or cliche; it's real, and more power to you. Thank you for sharing the tale.

As far as fret buzz goes, you might look into adjusting your truss rod. Or getting it adjusted; I had to get mine fiddled with for the same issue you're having, and actually paid a guy to do it, since I was afraid of breaking my guitar.

Yoga pants are not as comfortable as they're cracked up to be?

Yeah, skin-tight anything isn't very comfortable TBH. I dunno what it is....

I have indeed heard the cover. While I think it's not quite as haunting as the original, I definitely don't hate it either.
