So, if you were going to pitch your novel to a publisher, would you go for a big name one first (e.g. Tor/Forge), or try a small press?

I don't actually know what that is. O_o The Blizzard game? It looks cool...but I've no platform which can play it.

I don't have many, actually; after quick research, it seems like it was a sadly necessary thing at the time it was enacted. I can see ways that it would backfire now.

Such is the way of government.

I get all squeamish when I consider it. Despite my apathetic or brash facade, I don't handle rejection well. :P It's a necessary part of trying to get published, I know, so I'm working on it. But still.

Which is to say...I've not decided. If I try for a bigger publisher, which puts out more books, I feel like I'm more likely to get published.

At the same time, I know that larger publishers likely get inundated with manuscripts all day every day, so my book might just get passed over as noise unless something about it screamed 'fantastic', whereas a smaller press might actually take the time to look it over, see if they thought something valuable was there.

I love the books Enclave (formerly Marcher Lord) press puts out though, so I'm going to send one to them for...not for kicks, per se, but without much hope that they'll publish me either. :D They specialize in Christian Speculative Fiction/fantasy. And that's definitely a small one. So I guess that answers the question without all the verbiage above. XD Small first, then big if/when I get a refusal.

So what is the pitch for your novel, if you will?

Imagine you need to write an email to a publisher to convince them to publish your book. What would you say that could catch their interest?

Not only is that a question I want answered, it's a question you should answer when you start looking at actually getting published. At least, according to the few writers I've met before.

I'm not sure, actually. I don't really do pitches, because I tend to despise when someone pitches something at me. I walk out of my way to avoid the DirecTV guys standing in Wal-Mart. :P

I 'spose I would go try to blatantly honest: This is a story about an adventure upon which I, both as the author and as an avid reader, would not mind going on. It's got humor, action, monsters, superheroes, and a spooky villain or two. It takes place on a faraway and strange world, and it ends happily enough, with what I think is an important truth woven into the tale.

Marvel Comics or DC Comics?
Uh...could you ask an easier question? Like which foot I would like to give up? :P

Honestly, it's not that hard. Marvel, and Marvel all the way. Marvel comics tend to be a bit lighter and less moody and dark than their DC counterparts.

At the same time...the issue is less easy than it once was. Because I think the way DC does some things is better than how Marvel handles them. In the DC universe, the heroes are almost worshiped, with statues and museums and stuff, and only those in power are really against them. In the Marvel universe, the heroes are persecuted, and resisted to the point of ending the world several times, by the common everyman.

Of the two, the first is a far more real presentation; if some guy fought off the robbers about to steal my stuff and shoot me, I wouldn't rail against him because he used mutant powers to do so. No one would. If an alien from another world risked his life to stop a volcano, I wouldn't whine against his being not from earth, even if I lived half way around the world. No one would, except those whose power that alien threatened. Yet that's what we see in the Marvel universe all the time. We see it in the Hulk, we see it in the X-men, we see it in Spiderman. The heroes are hated for being different. We get the message. Let it go now.

At the least, DC can be less dystopian and whiny. :P Always a plus in my book.

Of course, both comics go back and forth on everything, and there are exceptions to every rule, and that's just a narrow slice of both universes. :D But still, the point remains. And I have to say, I love a lot of the DC heroes, and I love a lot of the Marvel heroes. TV show wise, I actually think DC is doing better than Marvel at the moment. Shield is just not that great compared to the Flash, or Arrow. :\ Agent Carter is nice, but even then...I think I'd still pick the Flash.

It's funny, but Deep asked me a question about a book I wrote, and I gave him a paragraph. You asked me a question about comics, and I wrote you a small dissertation. What does that say about me? XD

I agree with about 81% of what you said. I'm just a bigger fan of DC because I think the heroes don't have complete "copies" of themselves for villains. In Marvel its Hulk and Abomination, Iron Man and Iron Monger, Captain America and both Red Skull and Winter Soldier. They all have equal strength until the heroes find the 1 possible way to defeat them.

I don't see that much in DC like that, maybe The Flash and Reverse/Zoom and all the Bizaros.

But other than that, I like both

Farting drums?
That's one of those gifts you shove in the back of your closet and never think about again.

The rubiks; not the drums. Those could be interesting. Is it a drum set which farts, or flatulence used in place of drums?

The first would just be wildly hilarious. Best musical instrument ever, I feel. Smells like teen spirit, indeed. Especially if it was an electronic drum set with all the samples replaced without telling anyone.

The second...painful, but also wildly hilarious. Without lurid detail, you can achieve some nice percussive sounds with the use of a solid wood floor or metal barrel applied to one's backside. The backfire will hurt like the blazes, though. >_>
That would be hilarious! We have an electric drum set at our church and it might have a fart setting. Not sure though. Shenanigans at church can be fun depending on who is playing.

The Terminator series?

I think that's up for debate, though I can certainly see what you're saying, and I agree. I just think both companies do it; Batman's nemesis is the Joker, sure, but he's also got Ra's Al Ghul, who is basically Batman, but evil and with a goatee. The Green Lantern/s have Sinestro, and Dr. Fate has that evil Warlock guy that no one ever remembers his name. :D

I was actually conversating about this the other day, since in the Avenger's cartoons, the Avengers are constantly being taken over by an outside force and being made to fight each other, because no one else can beat them. I think the problem is that both companies drum up their heroes to the point that they are unbeatable, and they sorta get stuck. How do you beat someone who can't be beat?

Apparently, by making him or her fight themselves. Because the only way to stop an unstoppable force is with an immovable object. So Spiderman get's Venom, and Wonder Woman get's another Amazon (I want to say her name is Fury, but I don't remember). Aquaman gets Black Manta, and Ant-Man get's Yellowjacket. I'm sure there's a deeper message in there, but I can't currently dredge it up. XD

As far as feet go, probably my right foot. It's counter intuitive, since that's my dominant foot. But since it's the one that constantly goes first, it's also the one constantly getting toes stubbed or stuff, causing much pain. -_-

That's definitely a Wednesday prank, as opposed to a Sunday morning prank. >_>

I'm actually not a huge fan. The concept is cool, but they really got creepy with it. I mean, dude's best friend from the future...is his dad in the past. That's...odd. And uncomfortable.

I haven't seen any of the newer ones though.

I'm not sure I have one, honestly. Seems like a typical land acquisition of the time, though I don't know if Santa Anna had a right to sell that much land.

Well...probably. Like I sez though, I don't like pitching things. I guess I'm finding it hard to describe the book in the first place, let alone in such a way that isn't too wordy or too generic. So short and sweet honesty is the name of the game.

Cool songs though. XD Very epic sounding.
