What are your thoughts on the unfortunate separation of the once great country of Czechoslovakia?

It was probably bound to happen.

My understanding of the situation is that while Communism worked well for the Czech side, it did not work so well for the Slovak side. The Czechs were more powerful in the government, leading to resentment from the Slovaks. Meanwhile, the Czechs resented the fact that Slovakia seemed to have benefited from the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion, meant to curb communist reforms.

To quote Czech political analyst Jiří Pehe:

Common wisdom had it that the Slovaks were punished much less after the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 and that, in fact, Slovakia benefited from the invasion. The era of normalization was closely associated with Gustav Husak, a Slovak. A political asymmetry was created in the form of the Slovak Communist Party that had no counterpart in the Czech Republic.

This mutual resentment was only furthered after 1968, when a constitutional amendment split the country into two federal states of unequal size. To again quote Pehe:

The deficiencies of a two-state federation were suppressed by the centralized communist rule between 1968 and 1989. However, once the federal institutions were able to work in a politically free environment, they began producing problems.

First, there was initially a serious lack of clarity with regard to the division of powers between institutions on the republican level and federal institutions. Second, the upper house of the Federal Assembly—the House of Nations—could in effect block meaningful reforms.

The growing inability of the Federal Assembly to pass necessary federal laws was perhaps the most visible symbol of a growing decision-making paralysis. At the same time, power was gradually shifting from the federal government to the republican governments. The authority of the country’s president was also gradually shrinking.

To add to all of this, nationalism was growing in both sides of the country. Slovak nationalism is very well known, but Czech nationalism seemed to be more in line with keeping Czechoslovakia as it was. Perhaps this came from being the majority and being on the receiving end of many benefits, perhaps not.

Combine these circumstances into a boiling pot where the Soviet Union recently collapsed and Yugoslavia is violently tearing itself apart, and it seems unlikely that Czechoslovakia had any chance of staying intact. Who knows, maybe if certain things hadn't happened, Czechoslovakia would still be a nation today.

My personal favorite country to say the name of is Djibouti. But Czechoslovakia is fun too.

Favourite detective/crime TV show?

I enjoy CSI now and then, but I think my favorite detective/crime shows are Sherlock (At least the first two seasons), and The Wire. The Wire is amazing.
