See, the draw to Anime for me is that the story tropes are used in a distinctly different way than in most western television. And this is true of all media from Japan/China/Korea/etc, not just animated stuff. Especially Japanese horror. Ooooooh man, I love me some Japanese horror movies.

Did you ever watch Steins;gate? I think you'd like it. It's actually fairly clean, and the story is excellent. A university student accidentally invents a time machine that can send text back in time. When he does so, the world instantly changes to adapt to the change, and he is the only one who knows that anything has changed. I like the art style of Anime, but I would watch this in any medium. It's that good.

Huh. I actually liked that movie.

Because you have a super memory?

I must be watching the wrong ones...I usually find them pretty predictable, albeit in that "different" Japanese way. That said, the last time I picked up an anime it was aimed at kids, and a decade or so ago. So I might need to try again. :D

I actually liked that quite a bit. Do all their songs have that sort of classical flavor, with the violins?

Not dead. :D Not great. But not dead. XD

I'd say unicorns, but I'm reasonably sure those existed. Same with dragons, though I'm certain those did. Maybe do. Who knows?

I'ma say...fairies? The good kind, not the evil British kind.

In fairness, I can see where you're coming from. A lot of the more popular Anime here is either stupidly long and drawn out (Bleach), predictable (Naruto), or both (Dragon Ball and One Piece, I'm looking at you).

I don't want to sound like a hipster, because I don't do this to be "cool" or "unique" or whatever, but I've found that the better stories come from less popular series. Another is a simply incredible series, but because it is fairly violent, you won't see it on Cartoon Network or whatever. Going back to your point of Anime being simply "Cartoons", you're right. But I feel like Anime treats animated cartoons as a full expressive medium rather than just children's entertainment. Sure, there are western cartoons that are more serious, but while I can think of maybe two western cartoons that aren't crass and seriously unfunny comedy (Family Guy, looking at you), I feel like we in the west view animation as either a children's medium (which doesn't mean clean, it means child characters and/or very contrived plots) or simply a cheap way to make comedy. And I don't like it.

So in short, it's not the virtue of it being Japanese that draws me to it, it's that there are more examples of how cartoons can be used to make all kinds of stories work. There's nothing intrinsically "better" about it.

Not all of them. Most of them have classical influence, but some are a little more metal than anything else.

I can't remember if I showed this to you or not...

I have to give a talk this Sunday at church. Lucky me. :) But just out of curiosity, what comes to mind when I use the phrase "natural man?"

Hey, I like Dragon Ball. It's over 9000. >_>

I like Western cartoons in their current state (Except for the odd drug inspired ones that are so frequent now...Ever seen Uncle Grandpa?) for the most part. Because they're becoming less contrived and episodic, and more story based.

I guess for me, I don't see how anime isn't just a cartoon aimed at adults. Which usually just means taking similar storylines, and adding sex and gratuitous violence. Which reminds me of Titan A.E and the recent Marvel and DC comics movies.

That, also, was amazing. ^_^

This. I couldn't tell you why.

The second thought is usually man before Adam fell. Third thought it our current, fallen state.

Imagine you are a lemon farmer in a mountain area, who only have access in and out by railroad. And the railroads power line fall down due to a tornado. To connect enough lemons on the train with zinc and copper rods to get moving... good or bad idea?

Interesting idea...by the time you hooked up enough lemons though, they might have fixed the line. XD Maybe...squeeze the lemons and try to make one large battery with it?

Have to learn that eating random mushrooms is not OK, that 20 rupees (in the crystal form) is worth waaaaaaaaay more money than in their world, you can't solve your problems by shooting them, and that looting caves just isn't profitable at all.

Also, that most people (in the Western world, at any rate) will not agree to mortal combat to make up for a sleight against them.

Basically, that real life isn't as fun.
