Bruce_Campbell wrote:Just going to clarify why atheism isn't a religion. Atheism answers one question: Do you believe in a god (or gods)? If yes, you are a theist (or polytheist, which is really a subset of theism). If no, you are an atheist. Either side can be religious, but they are not religions in and of themselves.

There are some atheists who are religious. For example, some sects of Buddhism do not require belief in a god. There is even at least one atheist branch of Judaism. On the other hand, would you argue that just because someone believes in a god, that person is religious?
This so far is the only post in response from an atheist on this issue that has made sense to me. Because you clarified things than just saying "lolwut? athiesm isn't a religion, duh...it just isn't, its SCIENCE I tell you..duh".

Nobody said anything remotely like that here.

Umm....you're not the only athiest I've discussed this with. I've literally gotten cussed out on chat rooms for bringing it up.

Nobody here claims that atheists are any more polite than Christians either :) That I know of anyway.
All types subscribe to all belief systems.

Yeah, that's not to say that athiests are inherently rude. In fact, the show of emotion over the issue has always puzzled me.

Anytime you directly question or cause to be called into question a person's beliefs you're going to have drama.

And I've been cussed out by Christians for sharing my views on gay marriage. Some people are jerks, welcome to the world. ;)

Umm...alrighty then?

Arch assumed I was referring to him or other people responding to this topic. So I merely stated where I was coming from in my past experience on the topic. And I already clarified that it wasn't even criticism of atheists as a whole.

No need to get out the "athiest defense monkey squad" ;)

Technically no. You said his was the only which clarified the things rather than saying "lolwut."

I'll clarify then. His was the only one that explained things. The "lolwut" response is something I've found commonly among atheists.

And again this is not a criticism of all atheists or atheism in of itself. Its just something I've usually experienced with the ones I've discussed it with. Hence my criticism of Bruce's last post still stands.

Or we could, you know, treat people like individuals.

Or you could, you know, actually read my posts.

I feel like everytime I clarify what was said, one part gets cherry picked out of context and taken the wrong way...and now this. Have a nice day :)

Dude, you're picking fights with us because you don't like what we believe. I know some real jerks who are Christians, but I don't treat every Christian I know like they are going to be jerks, and that's exactly what you're doing to us.

Haha, I love being drawn back into this.

You really are twisting this the wrong way, go back and READ how the conversation started.

I'll summarize: I gave my opinion on the evolution issue, in agreement with your post. But because of one part in which I said I thought atheism was a religion, I was basically told to shut up. I stuck my guns and clarified my definition.

You and Arch responded and I conceded and thought that you had a good response, yes...that's right...I AGREED with your post (again) ....really sounds like I'm picking a fight huh? And because all I did was communicate past experience, again, I'm told to shut up.

Now, if you find a way to twist THAT, then I really should stop.

I think this is getting a bit too heated. If you guys want to finish this, maybe it's best over PM.

Locked.
